Not music, but comedy: Andrew Dice Clay opening for Bill Maher. Here in Phoenix, Dice had the crowd so riled up, they booed Maher off the stage. Organizers had to bring Dice back to the stage.

I find Clay to be unfunny and not to bright. Mayer is highly intelligent and well informed and definitely funny!

I guess he had his market.

    Just ask him.

Personally, I don't find him very bright. And boy does he like to laugh at his own jokes.

That way the evening wasn't a total loss. (That was the 90125 tour--they had Popeye cartoons on the Big Generator tour.)

Berlin was supposed to be the opener on that tour. I remember thinking how weird it was when the cartoons came on.

Popeye is always a good primer, as long as it's the Fleischer cartoons.

Michael Hedges opening for CSN in around '92.

Hedges absolutely blew our heads off and made CSN look like low-energy geezers in comparison; they weren't bad at all, just a bit anticlimactic following Hedges' acoustic "thrash" performance (he did the best cover of "Gimmie Shelter" I've ever heard, among other great stuff).

Suicidal Tendencies opening for QRyche on Empire tour.

While I am a big QRyche fan, I was really stoked to see ST...and was not disappointed with the energy or performance at all!

Edit: Disregard. It was Social Distortion, not Suicidal Tendencies.

Back in the day, I had some Latino friends who didn't like, or hated metal. Once I played them Suicidal Tendencies, they were instant converts. A crossover band if ever there was one.

I reall only know the one Suicidal Tendencies song, Institutionalized. I saw the video again a few weeks ago for the first time since I dont' know when. Still a cool tune. All he wanted was a Pepsi.

Chris Whitley opening for Alanis Morissette. His "Living With The Law" album is still a desert island disc for me.

I had completely forgotten about the cartoons, but it is coming back to me now. I was actually stoked to see Berlin as I liked some of their stuff. I remember thinking the cartoon thing was really strange.
