Sweet! Love the first two.
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally
This is one to get! Great. Looking forwards to it!
So now he rips off QE2. I wish he'd just stop.
Edit: To clarify, Rob Reed is obviously very talented and I'll buy anything Magenta-related, but this parlour trick he's doing with MIke Oldfield's catalogue was "one and done" with Sanctuary I.
I enjoy these as well, but I could do without the inevitable world-music sections. I preordered the deluxe edition from Bandcamp.
I don't really think it's more plagiaristic than many of the "Berlin School" electronic artists doing music in the style of Klaus Schulze or Tangerine Dream.
Got this in the mail a couple of days ago. Another very nice production - so far only watched the video content though.
A funny thing is that there’s a large note on the sleeve saying to listen to it more than once really experience it. Forget the actual wording.
I'm a big Rob Reed fan, have been since I discovered his first cd written and recorded when he was just 16, and that was CYAN For King and Country.
I agree with much of what you've written except I think ripped off is a bit stronger term than I would use.
Not a fan of the Mike Oldfield Sanctuary stuff, but love Magenta and some of his other outside projects.
I guess we live in a time when Prog artists, due to the nature of the music business these days, have to do what they can in order to survive and continue doing their craft.
If this is something Rob does which allows him to continue writing and producing great music than I'm ok with it, as long as Mike Oldfield doesn't have a problem with it. I don't know how MO feels about it, perhaps he's flattered. And it may draw attention to Oldfield's catalogue of music to fans who might not be aware of it.

Since Reed has been working with Les Penning and Tom Newman on these releases, it's pretty certain Oldfield is aware of them.
Top Cat, do you like the Cyan album Pictures from the Other Side? I loved that when it first came out. Still do, but it's been a bit too long since I last listened to it. I actually wrote a letter to Reed back then, which he never answered. Unrequited fanboyism! But I got to meet him at NEARfest and tell him how much I like that album, and he was very gracious.
Yes, I like that very much. It was clear how much Rob had matured with this cd in both writing, arrangement and production.
Although Rob is not a lead vocalist, I think he was adequate on the first cd, much like Tony Banks is not a singer but their passion for the material usually kicks it up a bit.
I wasn't sure when I first bought Pictures when I read the credits which noted a male lead vocalist and female backing vocalist.
But I think they make the second cd stronger, and the subject matter of the songs in my opinion required strong vocals.
Being here in the States it was hard to find copies from fringe artists like Cyan, so I felt fortunate to have landed a copy.
Kind of lost contact with what Rob had been up to until I discovered Magenta on Amazon.
We did bring out Cyan(For King) about 2 months ago and gave it a good listen on a Sunday afternoon.
I don't know if you've ever seen this video with an interview with a very young 16 year old Rob Reed, but I ran across it while doing research on YouTube several months ago.
Enjoy.

I have never seen that mini interview with the 16 year old Rob before, absolute classic, and true to form he has a Tubular Bells poster on the wall!
Great album
There's an interview on the DPRP from Last Sundays current album releases.
I like it, yes its a tribute/homage to Oldfield but Mike isn't writing much stuff like this any more (though Return To Ommadawn is excellent), its quite delightful. I'm in the minority of not liking the Magenta stuff.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

Harsh on Magenta, less pompous people you could not wish to meet. They are more rocking and exciting live than on disc, but the catalogue is quite varied, with some truly excellent albums.
The wonderful thing about music is it's appeal or non appeal doesn't make it bad or good. It's a matter of preference of what you like to listen to.
I don't like rap, punk or death metal, but other people do, but my not liking it doesn't mean it's bad. I wouldn't even want that kind of power of influence over people.

I don't own any of their albums. However, if they're ever playing at a festival that you're attending, don't just pass on them assuming they're not your thing. I saw them at Nearfest, and they crushed it. Outstanding. I purchased the live DVD they had at the merch table, and it's also really good. Excellent live band, with a lot of talent, in my experience.
