Hi.
I am a long time Magma fan, i have the whole discography on CD, and some on vinyl (the first album "Kobaia" and "Kohntarkosz). Is it worth buying the original vinyl version of "1001° Centigrade" and "Retrospektiw 1-2", in term of sound quality?
Hi.

I have 2 vinyl versions of 1001 centigrades, none of them sounds as good as the harmonia mundi CD.
But Retrospektiw 1-2 is also great on vinyl.
What about Kohntarkosz? Have you compared the 1974 original A&M vinyl and the 1978 Celluloid reissue?
No, I have only the celluloid print, and mine is lousy (I keep it for the cover). I have recently bought the seventh records CD version and its much better, but I have not compared it to A&M. My A&M vinyl of Hhai is excellent.
I like the vinyl versions better in all cases.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.
I’ve never even seen the A&M version of Köhntarkösz. My copy was the French Celluloid issue, which did come in a nice, glossy cover (but had one of those horrible, flimsy U-shaped clear plastic innersleeves I hate those! IMO, they’re the worst kind of innersleeve). I never found a copy of the A&M MDK until well after buying the CD, they must have been pressed in very limited copies (did A&M even release them as anything other than promo copies?). The most common Magma albums I’ve found domestically have been the live album (Utopia) and Attahk (Tomato). Oddly, my copy of Üdü Wüdü was not the Tomato release but another import, this time the UK reissue on Decal.
I’ve never owned the first three on vinyl. I’ve only ever seen the first two on vinyl via friends’ copies. The early Philips releases strike me as the sorts of albums you find in record stores hanging from a wall in a clear, plastic bag with a high price tag slapped on the front.

Magma vinyls are very rare. I've got Live / Hhai, but I'm terrified to play it.

Magma records aren't rare at all, especially the live album, which had three different US pressings. There are over 200 pieces of Magma vinyl currently on discogs.

I have the A&M version of Köhntarkösz also. Picked it up pretty cheap at a record show many years ago.
I have
Magma and Magma 2 both on Phillips
MDK - on Vertigo
Live and Attahk on Tomato
and Tristan & Iseult on Egg
Köhntarkösz I had but was never returned by an high school friend ...
Does anyone have any of the recent Mercury reissues? I saw them in Paris about a year and a half ago, but 30 euros was a bit out of my budget. Any thoughts on the quality?

I have just bought Retrospektive I&II on vinyl (not so easy to find).
Well, they're safer for the vinyl than paper, which has abrasive wood fibers. What makes them a problem is that they're so floppy that it's almost impossible to get them in the sleeve without them folding and exposing part of the record surface to the inside of the cover--thus negating the benefit of the plastic--unless you insert them bottom-first, which allows the disc to get dusty and puts it in danger of rolling out. Best thing to do with these, in my experience, is to put the disc in the plastic sleeve, and then insert both into a plain paper sleeve, which is much easier to deal with.
