Lindsay Cooper? Well, she's generally overlooked because although she's practically the only female bonafide composer to spring from (particularly advanced) progressive rock music, most participants in here don't actually (bother to) know her.

I know for a fact that -you- do, but most don't.

    Anna Meredith

Just found out about her, and posted this in the middle of my first listen. Just look at the instrumentation: Anna on keyboands/samples/sequences, vocals, clarinet, and percussion, with a band of guitar, cello, tuba, and drums/percussion. From her biography, she's a "legit", trained classical composer, complete with awards and orchestral commissions, who seems to have belatedly discovered the joy of playing in a rock 'n roll band - her own unique kind of rock 'n roll band, but still a rock 'n roll band.

So: Le Prog au progois, de la Grand-P? No. Progressive? Sure! Partly classical Minimalism, partly indie rock, partly her own odd thing. And maybe, just maybe a little bit of Eighties-and-onward Crimson (and though I wouldn't be surprised if she's never even heard of them, I'll bet her guitarist has).

I keep meaning to bother to know her better. Will commence on that little excursion this weekend with this timely reminder.

He-he. Cooper was one of a mere handful of formally trained composers in British progressive rock at the time, and her ventures into the 80s were indeed some of the best things about that whole decade. Both the News From Babel records and Music for Other Occasions are wonderful examples of something altogether fundamentally different drom each and every cliché known about the period. Of course, she also wrote a large bulk of music which indeed wasn't rock at all.

She is. She's released a number of collaborative albums over the years, with the most recent one, Works In Progress, in 2016. The year before that was Elemental Circuitry with Nathan Dyke. That one's nearer to the Web sound than the others.

Some of her more radical work like Sonic Seasonings needs more love. Everyone has this warped perception of her because of the Bach stuff. She really was quite the innovator and gets too little credit for it.

I haven't listened to this yet, but, looking at the names, there should be some advanced music here (which doesn't mean "progressive", though) :

Has nobody mentioned the great keyboardist of Anima Mundi, Virginia Peraza?
