Cuneiform amazing weekend deals on bandcamp

I just want to thank Steve and all others involved at Cuneiform for those amazing weekend deals at bandcamp.

I did not buy them all but quite a few. I would not have discovered amazing albums by Beat Circus, Heldon, Upsilon Acrux and now Rattlemouth without these offers.

I had to go for this weekend’s $5 Hughscore album! Sounds like a good one.

This weekend is Djam Karet’s Suspension and Displacement. Next week, can we get Burning the Hard City? I’ll buy it (have the CD somewhere).

This is great. Since I finally got signed up I've picked up albums by Djam Karet, Raoul Bjorkenheim and The Claudia Quintet. The only one I’ve missed so far was Janel & Anthony last week, and that was accidental.

I mean when you get down to it, how many Cuneiform albums aren't worth chancing a five spot on?

If you don't have their other albums, everything from Five Suns onwards is pretty much essential IMO.

Didn't you get to know Cartwright rather well personally, Steve? I'm only asking because I've only recently become -completely- aware of his overall stature in writing/teachings of modern US East-Coast avant-jazz. I was always in awe of Curlew, musically speaking, but then I realized how much of a star they cultivate with seminal figures in new creative jazz-forms, at least here in Norway where Cartwright comes across as much of a hero with younger jazz folks.

Pretty well. It was always a working relationship, but a particularly friendly one and I always enjoyed his company when were were in the same room (2 decades since that happening...) or speaking on the phone, and I still stay in contact with George, just because he's such a wonderful, charmer of a person, and I try to help him out when / if I can with advice if he needs some 'music biz' insight.

We had a wonderful catch - up conversation about a year ago on the phone and there's sometimes an email flying one way or the other....

Is this actually true? I certainly had no idea and I know that George has NO idea and he would love to hear about this if you have ANY links.

Sadly, I thought Curlew were mostly just forgotten now....

^ No links, just a general impression from speaking with performers and aficionados throughout the years both in Bergen and Oslo. I always suspected there might be a "downtown music" ethos to the connection, as many of these folks apparently got into avant-jazz in the 90s through the backdoor of Zorn/Laswell/Fier/Rothenberg/Horvitz and the likes. Presumably they picked up on Curlew that way.

I will never forget them or Tom Cora. I still remember well a gig all those years ago, I think it was at the old DC Space, and picking my jaw off the ground after a particularly frenetic cello solo. I didn’t even know you could do that with a cello.

They played three times at DC Space in the late 80s and early 90s and they were indeed amazing.

60' of video of the last time they played there is on the Beautiful Western Saddle / The Hardwood CD/DVD we put out a few years ago.

P.S. I just found this a few days ago. It's very good quality for a non professional shoot from the 80s.
