^^ If I didn’t already have this one on CD, I would’ve jumped on the Bandcamp sale for sure. Great stuff. Rob Mazurek is awesome.

Really enjoying this. IMO Manring and Alberti should have gotten equal billing.

I bought this too, and think it's a great album! I, too, was thinking it was surprising they didn't have equal billing, or done this under a band name they all could have shared. It's all improvised, so that does seem kind of strange. Anyway, it's great. The long track is fantastic. The album is so relaxing, yet there's a lot going on; I never lost interest.

Nice, man! I just followed you.

Had a feeling we'd have a bit of overlap in our collections. I did some scrolling through your collection and spied several that were on my wishlist actually.

^ Absolutely outstanding album, arguably J. Grigsby's finest achievement.

For "Scarfnet" and "Narcotic Lollipop" he finally got to realize his ensemble-visions with a grander grant to allow for more professionally hired musicians and studio facilities, and boy! it shows/hears. "Lollipop" has to be one of the most intricate charts attempted by a composer/writer who started out in rock music, and it swings and grooves and hits as well. Forceful, dense and wonderful!

Just spun Narcotic Lollipop on my hifi. What a killer composition. The trombone solo is excellent too. So much detail in the arrangement....keyboards, horns, mallets, etc just really excellent. I think some big band jazzers might dig it although it travels well outside of a traditional big band comfort zone, but that's what makes it so interesting. Talented guy.

It's Grigsby's homage to Stan Kenton, right? Some of those passages harken back to references of even the earliest works of Kenton (1930s!), but Grigsby himself is so layered in originality that basically every line he writes points some sort of induced reference in the first place. You can hear hints at Nino Rota and Bernard Herrmann as well. When I hear stuff as dissonant as this I always wonder at how the professional folks welcomed the sheet music, especially if all they were told was that "[...] this Grigsby is apparently some kind of rock'n'roll guy".

That's a great observation - I didn't "hear" that while listening but it does make sense. I don't really know most of these players, so it's difficult to ascertain what they thought of this music, but I can only surmise they must have really had a lot of respect for these scores because the performance sounds so damn good and very accurate (at least to my ears). I love these type of intricate compositions that you can spin 5 times in a row and pick out new musical "everything" each time. At points, this is as much a modern classical composition as much as a jazz influenced one. Really nice production too - not overly digital sounding at all.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

It's really Grigsby's homage to composer Bob Graettinger and his complete collection of compositions and / or arrangements recorded in his lifetime entitled "City Of Glass"

Bob is one of the most interesting, crazy, tragic and most mysterious figures in modern composition.

This is well worth reading (PDF download)

City of Glass is awesome. My great Uncle Greg Bemko plays cello on it. He is also on Zappa's Lumpy Gravy (credited as Harold G. Bemko) and Van Dyke Parks' Song Cycle.
