He actually controlled the planes with his cello. Kinda like Herbie Hancock on the cover of Thrust. You definitely didn't want to be on the barrel end of a heavy down bow.

This is well worth reading (PDF download)
I'll have to look into Graettinger's work then. I've had City Of Mirrors on CD for quite a few years now, I'm gonna have to find some time in the next couple days to listen to it again.

^ Quite possibly my single fave Acrux. Nothing ever sounded like this, not even within the more obscure realms of math-rock. To have music as "insect-swarm-like" in tonal texture come out as large-sounding and melodic as this is an enormous feat. That 28-minute tour-de-force is a complete monster if I ever heard one; it just goes on and further on, always something new, always something bigger and more surprising and welcome.

For some reason the flying double bass from Dolphy's Out There comes to mind.

Just bought, really quite excellent, my favorites by them are Head Full Of Poison & What You Will but all the ones I have are good to great. Saw them at Big Ears a few years ago and they were spellbinding.

The thing about Ahleuchatistas is that there's basically two versions of the group, each of which are quite distinctive from each other.

The first version who recorded four albums, including "What You Will" and "Even In The Midst..." for Cuneiform :
Very, very dry electric guitar tone - no pedals or effects, and a monster rhythm section.

Sadly there are no good videos of this version of the band, but this will sort of do - they were an incredible thing to see live as this gives a hint of.

There was a short-lived hybrid between the two versions who put out "Of The Body Prone" on Tzadik but the band quickly became a duo of Shane and drummer Ryan.

This group performs long form sets, Shane is using a lot of effects and it is very different from mk. I and kinda almost ritual-ish. A completely different sound and also a great live act. This is who Ian saw at Big Ears:

I see Stringy Rugs by Blast is coming up.

For anyone into -genuinely- challenging avant-progressive rock who still haven't checked 'em out, Stringy Rugs was one of those moments of total catharsis back in 1997 on release. Buy or cry.
