KINO - "Radio Voltaire" coming in March

I liked Picture, will definitely be grabbing this one.

Kino have announced the release of their new album ‘Radio Voltaire’, arriving 13 years after the band’s much-loved debut ‘Picture’ back in 2005. Out on March 23rd, 2018, it sees John Mitchell (It Bites, Lonely Robot) & Pete Trewavas (Marillion) teaming up once more, with Craig Blundell (Steven Wilson) on drums & John Beck (It Bites) guesting on keyboards.

Recorded at the end of 2017, writing began at the end of that Summer. “We actually began the writing process in late August,” says John Mitchell. “Pete had a few tunes and so did I, and we went from there.” Mitchell and Trewavas were both a crucial part of the original band more than a decade ago, with the former providing lead vocals and guitar parts, while the latter played his trademark bass lines and also contributed backing vocals.

Keyboard player John Beck, who is also a bandmate of Mitchell’s in It Bites, has been brought back. But while he was fully involved on the debut album, this time his role is that of a guest musician. “Yes, I am delighted to say we’ve gone John on board. His keyboard playing is splattered throughout the album, and I’ve also done the odd keyboard part myself.” The task of drummer this time fell to Craig Blundell, as Mitchell explains: “This time around Craig was the obvious choice to be the drummer, as far as I was concerned. I have worked with him so much that there was nobody else in the frame.”

Of the album’s direction, Mitchell illustrates: “The title sounds very cool and obviously there’s a connection with the band Cabaret Voltaire. But Voltaire himself (the 18th-century French philosopher) had a fascination with death, which appealed to me. He also stood for freedom of speech and freedom of religion. On top of that, I love the idea of a radio station that would reflect his views on life and cut through the bullshit which seems to be all over politics. Now, that is the type of radio station I think would reflect what a lot of us want to hear.”

The album cover has been designed by Paul Tippett, who is one of the most in-demand artists of the modern era. “I like what he’s done with this sleeve. It reminds me of Moulin Rouge meets ‘Live And Let Die’. It is very striking, and I am sure everyone will have their own interpretation of what it reminds them of.”

The album will be available on Limited CD Digipak (including bonus tracks), Jewel Case CD, Gatefold 180g Double Vinyl (incl. CD) & Digital Download.

I wasn't a big fan of the first album, but I know a lot of people like it. Quite a surprise. And more cross-pollination between Fish and Marillion - this time John Beck who's been touring with Fish.

Wow. This came out of nowhere. Glad to hear it - I love the first album, and pretty much enjoy anything that John Mitchell is involved with.

I, on the other hand, really liked the first album --- and this is an autobuy for me--practically anything John Mitchell produces falls in that category!

All I can say is wow...didn't expect that. Nicest surprise of the year so far.

i'm in. still love their debut to bits. pity about john beck's mere guest role … “picture” stands miles above the two iT BiTES / iT’S KINO albums that mitchell did afterwards.

Surprising indeed... I've lost track of the latest It Bites and John Mitchell releases, this one may be an opportunity to reconnect.

    Everything you just said X2.

I loved the original, and have enjoyed most of what Mitchell has been involved in. I am so glad they are making a second one.

    No Chris Maitland?

I still listen to Picture. I liked that first Frost* album and It Bites' The Tall Ships, all three similar sounding, but very good efforts. I sort of lost interest after that second Frost* which had Mitchell in a reduced role. But I am interested in a new Kino album.

Same here. Although I gotta say, the newest Frost* album Falling Satellites was VERY good.

Holy crap, I never expected another Kino album. I loved the first one (more than most of the revival It Bites stuff), so I'll be sure to get this one as well.

Can't really remember the first album. Didn't care for the first Frost* at all or the first Lonely Robots so haven''t gone further with them but I love the first It Bites with John Mitchell (Tall Ships) and the second one's not bad - wish they'd done more..

I guess the fact that John Beck is only a guest this time is deliberate to avoid It Bites comparisons. The first album was mostly a Mitchell/Beck collaboration which is now the basis of It Bites. It looks like the new album is mostly a Mitchell/Trewavas collaboration so it might sound different. As far as I know Trewavas composed a few bits on Picture but his involvement wasn't major.

One can only hope this album will be a stunner!....
