Challenge: progressive music suggestions for working out

OK - I love to go to the gym, but I HATE the music they play there. Even for pop, it sucks. I've also recently injured my foot and so can't do what I've been doing. That means I need extra motivation to do new exercises that I haven't grown to love yet.

What are some songs that should be on my playlist for the gym to keep the motivation up and are not painful to listen to?

I started lifting weights when I was eighteen and kept it up for about a year and a half. It was absolutely always Jethro Tull. Even though Yes was still my favorite band, I found that Tull always got my blood circulating, especially, Benefit, Living in the Past and Stand Up.

I found Rush's latest to work pretty well.

I’ve always found highly kinetic jazz fusion great for workout purposes. Mahavishnu, RTF, Arti + Mestieri, all highly recommended for such purposes.

I use Ementeht-Re for setting time for about a half-hour indoor bicycle ride. And as it builds its energy, I peddle faster. :-)
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.

I usually work out at home because I don't need a public audience for my arthritis-induced moans and groans and I prefer watching DVDs while I work out...but if I do work out to music, Rush works out pretty well. But I usually use metal, not Prog.

I just came from the gym a while ago. The house music is always the same dance/pop/crap. I understand why they play that music in most gyms. It's upbeat, and most people aren't offended by it, and all it really is, is musical wallpaper. I'd prefer to listen to heavy metal or classic/rock while excersizing, but I'd also prefer prog over dance/pop/crap. I don't have an MP3 player so I just ignore the house music (or try to ignore it). I just can't see working out and sweating with ear buds. I can't have anything on my head while doing serious cardio. All that sweat just goes everywhere.

Jordan Rudess's "Rhythm of Time" is a fairly good album for that, except for the two ballads.

I've been going to the gym (with mp3 player in tow) for 4 years now. The tunes/bands that I have found to be the most motivating are:

    Santana (especially LIVE stuff)
Al DiMeola (electric Rend., Casino, LotMS)
Iron Maiden (those galloping triplets really get me moving)
    Ozric Tentacles
    Rush
    Indukti

When i was stuck on a cruise ship for almost two weeks and a century cycling event was just around the corner, getting on the stationary bike w/the ipod was about all one could do to get ready... anyway, Ruins, Hella, Arti + Mestieri, Van Halen, Bella Band, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham and Kraan seemed like good fuel to maintain a high cadence and sweat output.

I generally work out to metal or hard rock, but when I do pick some prog to go along with my workouts, it's usually Rush, Gentle Giant, Yes, Genesis, VDGG, Tull, or Dream Theater.

I have listened to Ementeht-Re three times a week at the gym (except for very occasional missed days) since I got it, which was just after it came out. Including today.

Talking Drum was a good suggestion; just let it flow into LTIA Pt II

One could make a great workout mix of LTIA pt1 through pt4 and add Level 5 as well.
