    Rest in peace, Roswell Rudd

Roswell was one of my early free-jazz heroes, as my early hearing of the New York Art Quartet's 1st album somehow really stuck to my 16-17 year old ears! He was a great instrumentalist on the trombone and a lively and witty man.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago and he and his life & business partner Verna released this incredibly brave video in response, which takes a LOT more guts than I have!

I'm incredibly happy I got to work with him on a few great projects for Cuneiform

    Here's a nice obit

I'm embarassed to admit that I hadn't really taken any notice of him until last year when I bought the Strength and Power album with Jamie Saft, Trevor Dunn and Balazs Pandi (maybe I heard it on the radio or read a review, don't remember). It's brilliant energetic improvised music, and was amazed to find that Rudd was around 80 when he recorded it.

All my idols are leaving this mortal plane. Early in my life I played 'bone, and as I became interested in jazz, Ros was always there as the sine qua non of trombone players. I mostly knew his music as "out," but he had mads skills and could play all idioms. His work with Shepp was revelatory, and he was just cool as could be. He touched my life.
I'm not lazy. I just work so fast I'm always done.
