    I suppose I've always felt that Cheap Trick got dark in the way a black and white monster movie went dark, but Matthew Sweet got dark in a way that a bad marriage went dark.

    Cheap Trick does have some dark stuff, although it is not really all that apparent unless you listen to the lyrics. I don't hear much in common with Matthew Sweet though.
