I suppose I've always felt that Cheap Trick got dark in the way a black and white monster movie went dark, but Matthew Sweet got dark in a way that a bad marriage went dark.

Isn't Cheap Trick usually identified as "power pop"? They had some pretty dark stuff, like Auf Wiedersehn, Heaven Tonight, Gonna Raise Hell, Born To Raise Hell, Dream Police, You're All Talk, and Big Eyes all strike me as pretty dark songs. I'm not sure if I'd call Rick Nielsen's guitar attack "brutal", but he had some pretty tough riffs and solos.

Cheap Trick does have some dark stuff, although it is not really all that apparent unless you listen to the lyrics. I don't hear much in common with Matthew Sweet though.
