Wishbone Ash 30 CD Box Set - The Vintage Years

How can PE not already be abuzz about this, which I just saw on the Burning Shed site? All I need is that flexi-disk!
£250.00 I wonder if there are all kinds of royalty and rights issues boiling up?

Wishbone Ash's The Vintage Years 1970-1991 is a strictly limited deluxe 30 CD box set.

Authorised by all of the original band members, this beautifully packaged tribute to one of Britain’s finest Rock bands is loaded with rarities and memorabilia, and includes a lavish 156-page hardback book written by Classic Rock's Dave Ling.

A third of the collection features previously unheard and unreleased material.
Strictly limited to 2500 copies, all discs have been remastered. Along with copious extras - posters, poster book, 7" single and more - the set includes individually signed photos of each band member.

Released on Madfish, the label behind the award-winning Family, Steve Hillage and Small Faces box sets.

**This boxset will be shipped by courier. Save on postage costs by ordering anything else separately**

Founding member Martin Turner says, “We decided to give it all to the wonderful Pete Reynolds whom I believe has done a brilliant job of mixing and remastering a massive collection of work. It’s almost like having one’s whole musical life in one box. It certainly represents the most comprehensive Wishbone collection that I know of and I hope you enjoy it."

Andy Powell adds, "It’s truly amazing to look back at the musically fertile 1970s and 1980s and wonder at the sheer amount of incredible creative output from our band. We had great roots and a really strong blueprint for success. I feel blessed to have played my part in it all and I’m truly thankful that it’s set the course for my entire life and all the music that’s followed, as the band continues to live on into the 21st century.”

For me nice to see one I will NOT be buying. Btw the onslaught of Crimson mega boxes, the UK box, the Bruford box and possibly the Kenso DVD box, I'm all but boxed out lately.

Well,g iven the fact that the only Wishbone Ash albums I have on CD are Argus (listened to it the other day), and the original Live Dates (early 90's edition, with the Live In Memphis version of Phoenix as a bonus track), this one I hope I can scrounge together money to buy. I never did get that Steve Hillage box.

But I know what you mean about being "boxed out". Actually, I've felt that way since I bought the Jethro Tull 20th anniversary and Allman Brothers Dreams sets back in the early 90's.

Damn. Can't afford that right now but sure as hell would love it. One of my all time favorite bands. Never gets old.

I never did get that Steve Hillage box.
Burning Shed still has the Hillage box, which is worthy every penny.

I've not much WA, so am one of the 2,500 to have preordered it. I doubt I could snag a promo, and like the Hillage and Family boxes, it'll be nice to get a mega box that I can just enjoy, no strings attached. Not that I mind when I do write about them - I love it; but sometimes it's nice to just sit down and listen with no obligations.

    .
Well, at least it's stlil available. I was just starting to "get ahead", as Jimmy Carl Black says on If We All Lived In California..., and stuff like comes along to put me back to where I'm always at money wise.

As the creative period of Wishbone Ash ended with Live Dates, I think most of this box is filler material, thus strictly for the few hardcore fans that intend to be completists as well.

In the interest of John Wetton fans, this appears to have 3 extra tracks from the "Number The Brave" sessions, including a B-side and one song (in addition to the album's "That's That") with Wetton singing lead vocals.

Think I'll stick to my secondhand-bought'n'wornout copies of the first three studio albums. They're quite alright.

On sparetime, I'll perhaps read The Brothers Karamazov again - before spending life and dime on a 30-CD blah-blah box.

Definitely one for the hardcore collector! While Wishbone had a lot of great tunes (mostly on the first 3 albums), there's also a lot of dross. I bought the 4-cd compilation about 20 years ago specifically hoping to get some choice cuts from the later albums; even that set could've been trimmed by a disc easily without losing any substance. But, as always, YMMV.

John, you HAVE to do a thorough review! It's only 30 CDs!

Ok, I guess you can skip that one

I actually don't own any WA on CD - I used to have a decent amount on vinyl. Kind of tempting... It must be packed in a 12" x 12" cube or something!

I only have Argus and the first album (which I like better than Argus). I had Pilgrimage on CDr years ago but lost it somehow. I also had Wishbone Four years ago. Got rid of WA4. Found it mostly boring.

^^^ I just gave Pilgrimage a spin, thanks to this thread, and was surprised that it was a lot weaker than I remembered. A lack of any theme, a lot of noodling, scattershot in terms of style. This leaves only Argus and the debut as the ones to own as original albums. For everything else an intelligently chosen compilation is all that is necessary. Maybe Live Dates serves that purpose?

Their debut is the best - hands down. It's where the Man-influence pours through, but also where their playing is tightest and best, IMO. That part after the lengthy instrumental passage in the closing track when the whole band falls back in unison towards the end is absolutely magnificent. This was the thing pioneered by Quicksilver Messenger Service but usually lost on them, as they were too high'n'sloppy while performing (although Happy Trails and the fantastic debut hints.

Argus has a higher rep due to sales and influence (Lizzy, Maiden, Priest et al.), I believe. But it's an overall somewhat patchy record, to my ears.

Their best ever track was the title one from the second album, though. Again: IMO.

Yeah, for me the vintage years were 1970 to 1973. Some of the live stuff would be worth hearing, but this is way more Ash than I will ever need.

Now the Aka Moon 'complete works' 20 CD box that has just been announced is a quite different kettle of fish. As well as being less than a quarter of the price.

I remember a blog I read around the time of American Don where Damon Che announced that they would be doing both "Valediction" and "Pilgrimage" live. I always wondered what became of that. It'd be really cool to hear it.
