    CTI Records

I have recently been revisiting Creed Taylor's great recordings of the '70s, including Don Sebesky's orchestrations. Some very nice productions!
    • Paul Desmond - Concierto, Pure Desmond
    • Deodato - Prelude, Deodato 2
    • Stanley Turrentine - Salt Song, Sugar
    • Freddie Hubbard - First Light, Red Clay
    • Joe Farrell - Outback, Joe Farrell Quartet
    • Hubert Laws - The Rite of Spring

What are some of your favorites?

Deodato - Prelude got TONS of spins on my bedroom stereo back in the day.

...Wasn't Allen Holdsworth - Velvet Darkness on that label too?....If so, that got tons of spins too.

The only two I have are Allan Holdsworth's solo-debut Velvet Darkness and Esther Phillips' Capricorn Princess (the latter only in my collection because of Holdsworth's pedal steel guitar... ;-) )

Love the CTI Record album covers though.

I have a number of favorites - especially from the 1968-1971 period - but this label produced a fair amount of dreck as well, IMO.

Among my favorites that I haven't already seen mentioned:

    Antonio Carlos Jobim- Wave
George Benson - Shape of Things to Come; Beyond the Blue Horizon
Paul Desmond - Bridge over Troubled Water
    Joe Farrell Quartet
    Randy Weston - Blue Moses
    Airto - Free
    Ron Carter - All Blues

Those covers are lovely collected in the book "The Color Of Jazz" (which seems to be a collectable item right now).

    More of that book: http://hymiesrecords.com/the-color-o...omment-page-1/

the early George Benson albums kick serious muck, as do the Joe Farrell albums
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

He's pretty much the dominant voice on it.

I like these ones and adding Moon Germs. Beyond that, it's a pretty spotty label TBH, especially considering the talent involved. That said, I haven't heard a few that are getting praised here.

But, it's filed under 'H' not 'D.' Important point to remember!

They only lose me when including vocalise, which is pretty rare. And to be fair, some of their biggest hits (viz. George Benson) included it!

Not going to be very original, though:

    Deodato - Prelude, 2
Freddie Hubbard - First Light, Red Clay
Joe Farrell - Outback, Joe Farrell Quartet, Moon Germs
Hubert Laws - The Rite of Spring
George Benson - Shape of Things to Come; Beyond the Blue Horizon
Paul Desmond - Bridge over Troubled Water
    Airto - Free
    Bob James - 1, 2

there are also some sdgood/greattuff on the CTisubsidiary label Kudu, like Joe Beck and Grover Washington, Idris Muhammad, Johnny Hammond, Eric Gale, & Lonnie Smith... Same musical crowd.
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

Yes. CMP records. I like the album very much. I have their second as well, but it's not as good, as Snake Music.

I think my entire CTI collection is Concierto, Velvet Darkness and Deodato 2.
