Wow. I'm a Sonar user, but my version is 10+ years old (as is the computer it's on). I have no idea what my next step is. My needs at present are so minimal I'm not that concerned about it, and my investment has long since paid for itself. But for people heavily into this system, I'm sure it's a major shock.

I've worked variously on a lot of DAWs and I always found Cakewalk the most intuitive, particularly the Sonar version I have. Admittedly, I don't do a lot of higher order stuff, but for my needs of just getting some demo stuff together using a combination of MIDI and audio, it really worked great.

    Bye bye Cakewalk, I guess.

I have Sonar installed on an old XP computer (now isolated from my network and the Internet), but haven't even turned that system on in over a year. I'll likely never feel like I got my money's worth out of Sonar since it never played well with the hardware I had when I first got it.

I bought a Reaper license a few months ago. It's cheap and serves my simple needs. I found the basics pretty easy to pick up and there's a ton of tutorial videos on the Reaper site.

Oh, well. I suppose that all of these DAW's are fairly similar. Can any of them import Cakewalk files? Is it now time to join the Pro Tools Mother ship?

I've just switched to Reaper FROM Pro-Tools. I got sick of it crashing all the time. So far so good and there is no reliance on Avid products, you can use any interface you like.

Well holy crap...I just upgraded to Sonar Pro a few months back after my old (XP) computer died (with Sonar 7.0 installed on it)

...any word if someone will come in and buy CW from Gibson?

I have an ancient version of Cakewalk I bought for a stupid bargain price from Half Price Books ages ago. I failed to ever install it on any computer I have owned. I wonder if it would even still be usable.

It would probably work. I'm thinking I could probably even migrate my version of Sonar to a new machine, should the need arise. I might hit a licensing issue, but apparently Cakewalk isn't too picky about licenses, especially on older products. So at worst, I'd have to try to clear up the license, at best it wouldn't be a problem. But I assume it would function, though in practice, who knows.

I was a Sonar user when I was PC. Went Mac about 10 years ago, and after playing with Pro Tools and hating it I found that Logic was similar enough to Sonar to make me happy.

So if you're thinking of going Mac, Logic can do most of what Sonar does.

Oh, I wondered if someone might decide to take this on. Certainly the development team would be worth preserving. Hopefully these guys can keep it liming onward...
