So much on that album that still sounds fresh, it was so far ahead of its time.

I can think of quite a few other Belgian bands that would fit this thread well if the word "jolly" was removed...

Cliché probably had more of it though, while L'Apprendista was where their full-on contemplations on GGiant-like folky progressive came to fruitition.
I think you're right that it's really Clicé (and Pinocchio Bazaar) that have the most of this, though there are bits and pieces elsewhere.

That's a most excellent yet for some reason almost totally overlooked work.
I think it's a really great one. Adding to my listening pile!

Great calls so far. I'm gonna throw in one of my all-time faves - I think it qualifies for the genre. This is absolutely seminal for me. I'm sure most of you are familiar with this gem:

GREAT album, but I see nothing "jolly" about Desperate STraights.

Fair enough, I guess for me it makes up for it's lack of jollity with an extra-helping of quirkiness...

<edit> The album in retrospect is actually fairly morose. although I find "Some Questions About Hats", "Apes in Capes", Strayed" rather jolly, but that's just me.

Very jolly and loads of fun, especially live, not sure there's much ultra quirky avant going on.

Strayed is jolly, but hardly quirky. It's a songy song.

    imo.

I think there is enough music to cover in terms of the intentions of the OP that we don't need to stretch it to include favorites that don't 'fit the remit'.

    again. IMO.

that's why i didn't. but i am of maritime origin (baltic & north sea) and sea shanties are part of my DNA, although many of them may pass as mere drinking ditties …

I think that SOME of France's Noetra squeak into this category. What say you? Keeper?

You're really talking about my kind of music here -I have and like all those in the first post. I'd also include Hawk and a Hacksaw (first two albums -somewhat strraighter and more folky after that)

and more recently Pampa Trash who are somewhere in the vein of Nimal:

I don't know if it can really be categorized as "progressive", since the music is traditional, but otherwise Ivo Papasov fits the bill quite nicely. I laughed out loud in joy the first time I heard his band.
