One song - 2 bands at the same time

Battlescar came on shuffle just now. It's pretty amazing that two full bands of musicians could get in the studio and do something that works so well with all members on one song. I mean, the multiple-bass thing in the intro is amazing, the guitars wail, both singers unleash and it all just comes together so powerfully. In fact, it has one of Peart's most impressive and satisfying fills of his career (2:30 in the video below).

I was trying to come up with another example of two bands collaborating on a song on a studio recording like this and nothing came to mind. Are there any?

There are plenty of times bands have had guest musicians, but I can't think of two entire bands doing that. I guess Henry Cow/Slapp Happy, but that's kind of cheating because Cutler didn't have anybody to share drum duties with.

I don't think any of the band *members* were in the studio at the same time, let alone the bands.

Some of the band members might not have been in the studio at all as far as the final result was concerned...

That's probably why he put the "Live" in there.

Hmm... I consider Union Live a studio recording because of all the overdubs that certainly must have taken place, etc. Yeah, that's the ticket!

This might almost count, although again it's live. A Rush of Adrenaline - Nick Barrett and Clive Nolan doing acoustic versions of songs of Pendragon, Arena, and associated projects.

How about David Gilmour and The Orb?

I think Picchio dal Pozzo and Yugen became a megaband for a bit.

They didn't release anything but as a member of the audience at the RIO performance I can confirm that that band was a sight & sound to behold. It was the reason I started going to RIO, it was monstrously good.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

I'm told that the DKV collaboration albums with the Mats Gustafsson/Paal Nilssen-Love outfit and the AALY Trio are pretty fantastic, but I haven't heard 'em yet; having sprung for the two mega DKV boxes earlier in the year I figure I'd absorb those first.

Motorpsycho did a concert with jazz band The Source and ambient drone artist Deathprod. Part of the show was released as the live album, Roadwork Vol 2: The MotorSourceMassacre.

Oh hell...the Public Enemy/Anthrax just reminded me of the great album 'Derbe Respect, Alder' featuring Faust and Dälek

All of Van der Graaf Generator apparently sings on the title track to City Boy's Dinner at the Ritz.

I'm surprised nobody's chimed in with Kiss + Gin Blossoms.

Ummm.... Run-DMC and Aerosmith doing "Walk This Way?"

More seriously: Chick Corea's Elektric Band vs. Steve Vai's Monsters doing "The Rumble" on the Leonard Bernstein tribute The Songs of West Side Story. Amazing!

Cobra handling and cocaine use are a bad mix.
