Yes it is heartbreaking. I can barely imagine what it must feel like to go through something like that.

I was amazed though when I read that he had the foresight to do this...

Krause, who worked with artists like the Beatles and the Doors before becoming an innovator in field recordings, backed up all of his recordings to hard drives that live outside of his home — one is in a safety deposit box in a bank, another is in Europe.

Yes, most everything else can be replaced. His 5,000 hours of recordings of lost environments cannot.

Terrible news, a whole life's work gone into flames...

But hopefully, everything is not lost:

"Krause, who worked with artists like the Beatles and the Doors before becoming an innovator in field recordings, backed up all of his recordings to hard drives that live outside of his home — one is in a safety deposit box in a bank, another is in Europe. But everything else he owned is gone, including his two cats."

... and (most importantly) Bernie and his wife were not injured (but what a pity for the cats).

These Fires are heartbreaking. I just arrived home from the Central Coast after diverting to Eastern CA to avoid the fires. I was heading to Santa Rosa to the Alembic Guitar Factory to check on the progress of a one-of-a-kind Bass I have there for repairs*. The owners of Alembic have reported the Wickersham Family is well as well as all their employees. Been watching the mandatory evacuation maps and so far, the factory is not in the zones.......

The home of Peanuts creator Charles Schulz also went up in smoke. His widow managed to escape in time. I think Schulz's son lived in the same area and also lost his home.

As reported elsewhere, his recordings were backed up offsite.

Charles M. Schultz' (Peanuts) residence was destroyed along with a lot of irreplaceable artifacts.

    D'oh.

    Plus I spelled it wrong.

Apparently the nearby Schulz museum made it through OK though there will have to be some cleanup from the effects of the smoke.

Yeah, I was relieved to read the museum's okay after a line about all the memorabilia in the house being destroyed. Whew!
