Thread: Mohini Dey

    Mohini Dey

Until today I had never heard of her. But she is areal talent, just 20 years old but with huge talent. Mostly plays with a fusion group that fuses Indian music, Karnatic music and fusion, but this one here comes close to prog.

She might be. Kinda hard to tell with that pre-programmed mechanical tune.

Here are a couple tracks with a little more humanity in them.

    And with Prasanna

    She's incredible!

She is that. But Federico Malaman is even beyond her talented. And to tell the truth, I had not heard of him either when I originally posted the first clip. He makes it look easy. But while she works in fusion, he mainly works as rock and even kind of soul musics.

Love Mohini. But check out Federico doing duets with Hadrien Feraud. Unreal.

I saw her play at Bass Bash a few years back with Federico, then the next day at NAMM. A force of nature and
a really sweet person. I talked to her and got a photo with her. Mihini Dey at NAMM.jpgMe and Mohini Dey at NAMM.jpg

Man, there has been a spate of great female bassists lately:

    Mohini Dey
    Tal Wilkenfeld
    Rhonda Jones
    Kinga Glick
    Elin Brekken

I am sure I am missing others.

Rick's interview is great.....that was great to watch, and really opened up my understanding of her background. She is a force of nature.

She was absolutely amazing playing with Randy McStine & Maro Minnemann on Cruise To The Edge 2022. I got to stand basically a few feet from her at the pool stage performance for part of the show. That whole band was killer.

Here is a picture I took:

I remember she did the scat singing thing on the cruise. Not sure if it was this exact same song, but it sounds like it.

I became aware of her when I picked up Dewa Budjana's Mahandini album. She does konnakol on it and man what a player. Marco Minnemann is the drummer on this one, Jordan Rudess keyboards with guests John Frusciante, Mike Stern and more. Amazing record.

Mohini Dey was great on Terry Syrek's "Story" album - it also had Marco Minnemann and Lalle Larsson on it.

Definitely check this song out - fantastic! :
