RIP WALTER. THANK YOU FOR SO MANY MEMORIES.

Caught SD a year ago and he seemed fine, both physically and musically.

A smart, hip duo, and arguably the best American band of the 70s.

    RIP

It's a good forum for information but too intimidating to join (and obviously His mastering work must be praised at all times!). I was instantly reminded of that thread on there about Walter Becker from earlier in the year. It appears they'd played shows without him recently so clearly there were problems.

Aja in particular I listened to a whole lot when I first got it. Pure class...and a reminder that there was a time when such an album could be a big seller!

RIP Walter Becker..... aren't they touring right now?

RIP - a horrible loss. An indispensable part of the Steely Dan duo - which makes Fagen's comments about Steely Dan continuing all the more distressing. Is *nothing* sacred?

Very, very sorry to read this.

SD were one of the great songwriters and recording acts of our time; how they managed to somehow also become massively popular is wonderful and amazing to me.

Their lyrics were snarky and funny and sometimes even really insightful.

"Turn up The Eagles, the neighbors are listening."

    Rest In Peace

I think Steely Dan's output bristles against the idea of the sacred. I think writing and releasing new music under the Dan moniker would be violating, but larding Becker's estate with touring dollars wouldn't be. Your mileage may vary, vary of course. I feel keeping the music alive is a good thing at this point, rather than welcoming the night.

RIP once again, dear, wry Walter.

Donald Fagen toured as a solo performer for years playing Steey Dan music. One might hope that the death of one of the two people who constitute Steely Dan might signal a return to this for Fagen. I guess he just craves the money too much.

I doubt it's about money at all. He's got more than enough to last the rest of his life, I suspect. I saw him last month with his new solo band and it was clear he was there because he was having a great time. In fact, he seemed happier and more animated than he's been at a Steely show in years.

In an obituary thread. Is nothing sacred indeed.

My guess is that this eventuality was already covered by Donald and Walter. The later had not been well for a while. Note that Fagen uses the term "the Steely Dan Band". I think that's intentional. There's no reason that Fagen couldn't continue with many of the same musicians as a touring unit under that name. I don't think that would offend anyone's tender sensibilities.

I'm not sure he's indispensable to what is essentially a repertory band. But re: new SD music, yes.

    RIP Walter.
Glad I got to see SD a bunch of years back. They're supposed to play Baltimore soon. Wonder if the show will go on. I know he missed some shows because of sickness, but we never heard it was anything terminal.
    We'll miss his talent.

Very shocked and saddened to hear this news. Being born in 1969 and sneaking into my older sister's room to listen to her records, Steely Dan were like opening the most magical fairy tale book and at the same time almost making me feeling ashamed, like I was looking at a nudie mag. Thanks for the music Walter, RIP
