    United Jazz+Rock Ensemble

Been spending the day with UJ+RE, which includes the royalty of German/English progressive jazz:
    • WOLFGANG DAUNIER - piano, synthesizer
    • VOLKER KREIGER - guitars
    • ALBERT MANGELSDORFF - trombone
    • JON HISEMAN - drums
    • BARBARA THOMPSON - soprano & tenor saxophone
    • CHARLIE MARIANO - soprano & alto saxophone
    • ACK VAN ROOYEN - trumpet, fluegelhorn (wait he's Dutch, isn't he?)
    • EBERHARD WEBER - bass
    • IAN CARR - trumpet, fluegelhorn
    • KENNY WHEELER - trumpet, fluegelhorn

They released ten albums 1977-1999 along with a number of compilations and repackagings.

    Any other fans???

I dig the first few releases. Some of the later ones veer uncomfortably close to instrumental R&B for my taste.

I have plays Barbara Thompson and LIve in Shutzenhaus and enjoy both.

Are there any earlier ones that have more teeth?
no tunes, no dynamics, no nosebone

I like them, from memory in the beginning the band was formed when Dauner was asked to do some live music for a German TV show. The records were released on the independent 'Zweitausendeins'/MOOD label which had their own shops all over Germany . The label/shops closed unfortunately 10 years ago.

I looked it up. The TV show was called 'Goldener Sonntag' (golden sunday) and was aired on sundays up from 1976, basically show where you saw a family watching TV and commenting different social topics ( the father was a famous political satirist) while in the fictitious TV show, Albrecht Metzger who would a bit later present the Rockpalast nights introduced a "nameless" jazz band which played between 5 and 10 minutes every time and become then the United Jazz+Rock Ensemble.

My personal favorites are "Teamwork" (1978) and "Live in Berlin" (1981). They're the most "Nucleus-like." I agree, "Live Im Schütenhaus" is one of their lightest (also their first).

The "Plays The Music Of" series appears to be all reissues, since all ten members contributed writing. They made compilation albums of nearly everybody in the band.

Just personal - I was exploring deep into quite avant-garde jazz and finally questioned myself what the heck I was listening to UJRE helped me find the way back

There was a very lively Jazz scene in Germany , helped by the fact that every region (Land) of the federation has it's own public radio/TV station which produced interesting non mainsteam muisc and which have often their own ochestras , the WDR has a great big band that worked among others with Joe Zawinul , and /or supported avant jazz or jazz rock. the NDR produced recordings of Soft Machine , Nucleus which are released now and then by Cuneiforme or other labels.

I've done a first investigation while reading Hiseman's Playing In The Band book, but I had a problem making sense of their discography back then (locating discs, looking in libraries and even Yiutubung it back then)

    Then I lost track...

What are their better albums and are they srtill in print (CD format).
my music collection increased tenfolds when I switched from drug-addicts to complete nutcases.

^I remember reading about these coming out as 'twofers' on CD but I don't have them and I don't think they were in print for very long. The ones that came out are listed here, starting at 2010:

    https://www.discogs.com/artist/96353...&type=Releases

Don't think much by Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia ever made it onto CD either (the MCA Wilde Tales, for instance).

These are maybe Esoteric Records territory on CD...along with the two MCA Colosseum II albums! Whole swathes of Hiseman's career are out of print.

Count me in. I have all their early records and a few latter period ones. Great band, regardless of lineup!

The Mood label released some other interesting records often from the same pool of musicians.
Dauner released a couple of solo records, my favorite being Changes, there is a record (recorded live in east Berlin in 83) by Manfred Schoof with Dauner, Mangelsdorff and Weber and an Acoustic jazz-folk Guitar Duo : Kolbe and Illenberger (Dauner played on their first 3 records. Stylish layout too, all the Mood recordcovers came in b&w with black innersleeves.

I'm a big fan, I have 10 of their albums and the rest are on my wish list. Picked up 6 in a shop in Munich August 2016. Some of my favorites are Teamwork, Break Even Point, and Wolfgang Dauner's United 2.

Thanks for both of these. Very nice.

I notice Dauner's stuff outside of UJ&RE (like Et Cetera) is generally pretty tough sledding -- avant garde -- lots of ring modulator. Except his solo piano album.
