Virtual Reality Glasses w cell phone

WOW ! These things are fun ! Tell us your stories !

I was at a party over at a buddy's house, and every so often, there were screams coming from one of the neighbor's houses. "Oh, don't worry about it. They're using the 3D glasses again." We went over, and sure enough, that's what it was. So everyone had a chance with them. Some guys were videoing their wives freaking out when 'stuff' happened as they were wearing them ! (Flying scissors at you, scary clowns attacking, ghosts etc.) The one that got me was the underground rollercoaster one. It really felt like I was going off cliffs, steep vertical drops, etc. I was leaning in my seat going around corners it seemed so real. You KNOW it's not real, but it fools the body so much, I had to stop because of the motion sickness!! (Nobody made all the way thru )

The future for these things seems unlimited to me.

(I tried to find a thread about this, I can't believe this hasn't been talked about before.)

I want a pair, but have been under the impression that software to play on them is still very limited. What were you watching? What brand were the glasses?

I don't know which one it was or if the software was online or not, but it was a headset that you put your phone into, sorry, that's all I know.

A quick peek on google images and I think it was the Samsung Gear VR headset. I cant believe they're so cheap. I have no experience with others so I can't compare/recommend. I'm hoping people will start posting. Maybe there's better ones out there. I was always interested in this, my interest is in overdrive now.....

I bought a pair of CARDBOARD 3D virtual reality glasses a couple of years ago, which worked acceptably well but the only images available were some CARTOON still shots.

    No movies (!)

    No photos (!)

I left the room severely disappointed.

In the greeting card section, I noticed there's a card(s) available that unfolds into some sort of 'Google Cardboard' headset. Then the receiver puts his phone into it and watches something or other, I'm not sure what. (or how). Prob have to call a number/app/webpage ?? Looked like an interesting idea. Even Viewmaster is into the 3D glasses these days.....seems like a lot of conflicting systems for 3D out there.....

I tried VR couple of times. I "visited" some Italian city and also "skydived". It is impressive but it made me feel groggy every time. My head was spinning, had problem with balance and felt sick in my stomach. I guess it is not for me

I have one - I use my Droid turbo in it. Its cool - the roller-coaster thing is fun, but imo the best thing for me is Google maps Streetview. Man, thrown on some Ravel or Debussy, and you can peruse the French countryside and check out medieval villages for free. Its damn near insane at times. You're not there (of course), but it does a damn good job of convincing your brain that you JUST might be there. The combination of all of these technologies (phone, Google Maps, VR glasses) working together is pretty astounding, and its still in its early stages if you ask me.

    Negatives:

    1) I have a bigger than normal honker, and it doesn't fit me right! My nose hurts using these things!

    2) Little specks of dust look like giant boulders when you look through this due to the magnification lens. I should've been a bit more careful when I was putting the thing together; in a way its flawed because of this.

    3) I have crappy vision and wear glasses 24/7. I am forced to use this without glasses, but I can't seem to adjust the focus to get it perfectly clear for me. People with contacts or good vision will have no issues with this.

If you want to try it out, the cheap cardboard ones are like $10 ordered, and it will give you a taste of what these things can do. I Can't imagine the technology in about 5-10 years from now.
If it isn't Krautrock, it's krap.

My dentist has a really early 3D goggle kit and a bunch of movies you can watch during procedures. The ones I've seen were pretty hokey, effects-wise -- but other 3D movies I've seen in theater (like Avatar) had startlingly good 3D. There's potential there, for sure. Games and especially Virtual Reality exploration software (like walking through the Louvre, or hiking the North Cascades, or swimming the Great Barrier Reef) would be worth the money.

There just doesn't seem to be much good content available yet.
