This was a great short-lived band
Abercrombie's humorous credit under the psuedonym "Lester Larue" on Dan Wall's "Off The Wall".

This just popped up on my iPod shuffle today - beautiful..
Another sad loss.
It's been tough few years for us music fans.
Glad I was able to see him quite a few times perform with Ralph Towner at McCabes back in the 80's. They played quite a few shows back then, I was at them all.
And if there were a god, I think it very unlikely that he would have such an uneasy vanity as to be offended by those who doubt His existence - Russell
Just posting to get this back in my subscriptions so I can build a list of recommended discs for my Amazon wishlist
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down.'- Bob Newhart
I'm a big fan of his work with RAlph Towner. I saw him perform at my local Jazz Center about 7 or 8 years ago and he looked very frail, but played wonderfully and told many stories with great impersonations.
Most folks know I hate having to answer the question "who is your favourite guitarist," but I will say this: in the Jan world, if I had to pick just one guy whose discography (leader and guest/co-leader) incould take to be proverbial desert island, chances are pretty high it would be John A. Of course I'd have to be able to bring things like pre-ECM Cobham (and Dreams), plus every ECM album he ever appeared on (I've got 'em all). Even albums I know like teback of my hand continue to surprise me, decades and countless spins later. There are others I love, but I cannot think of anyone who managed to be instantly recognizable without any "signatures" either totally, harmonically or melodically. I caput any album on anytime and be inspired. Having the privilege of write the liners to his ECM First Quartet box remains one of the high points of my writing life.
