    Your Top Five Zappa Albums?

In order of preference, please. I still am pretty unschooled in Zappa - lots of albums I've never heard. I probably can't even come up with a top five. For example, I've heard Joe's Garage lots of times but am pretty sure it's no longer a top five for me. Your lists will help me decide what to listen to next.

I wouldn't consider myself a huge fan, but definitely enjoy a fair amount of Frank's work. I was never a big fan when Frank's humor manifested itself too overtly, so I really don't care for albums like Thing Fish, for example.

But here is how I'd sum up my top 5:

    1. One Size Fits All
    2. The Grand Wazoo
    3. Sleep Dirt
    4. Waka Jawaka
    5. Uncle Meat

Curiously enough, "Weasel's Chunga One-Sized Weeny" sounds like it could be Zappa title...

BTW, I'm certain I've asked this question before! But people seem to enjoy it.

I loaded the following onto my iPhone today:

    Apostrophe
    Just Another Band from LA
    One Size Fits All
    Sheik Yerbouti
    Waka/Jawaka

BTW, I've heard all of these before once or twice except Just Another Band From LA. And Apostrophe and Sheik I heard a number of times in college and once or twice since but don't remember too well.

    Hard to say.

His music is such a mixed bag, and that was on purpose - some of his best instrumentals would be followed by joke songs that (if you're older than 13) were funny once, if that. And his refusal to make value judgements about his own music meant that almost every album had that quality. With that....

    Uncle Meat
    Burnt Weeny Sandwich
    Roxy and Elsewhere

    ..........and three from among.........

    Make a Jazz Noise Here
    Studio Tan
    One Size Fits All
    Wazoo
    Roxy by Proxy

Those last two are posthumous live releases, so whether they count as "canonical" Zappa records is open to question. But for sheer energy Roxy by Proxy is hard to beat, and its raw, warts-and-all imperfections only add to its delights. And while Wazoo may not be terribly well recorded, it documents some fairly rare material played live by a road-tightened band, whose huge sound might have been close to what Frank heard in his head.
