No where in my posts did I say Jagger had a GOOD voice. He doesn't. I'm only a Stones fan (with a few exceptions) thru Aftermath, and certainly not because Jagger was in the band.
He DID have a lot of power early on imo, and that's why I named him.
The most amazing thing about Lips is that he has the stage energy at 71 that he had at 21.
"My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician, and to tell the truth, there's hardly any difference"
President Harry S. Truman
Some good names mentioned, like Michael Sadler. Early on he seemed to mimick Freddy Mercury a bit too much in his stage presence. Certainly has the pipes though. And Bruce Dickinson? "Old leather lungs" is more like it, the guy can still belt it out. One of the great metal vocalists ever, for power, range and certainly stage presence.
Now certainly not in terms of power, but stage presence, Steve Hogarth is quite the commanding and engaging front man.
That describes a lot of hair metal, so to me these characteristics aren't necessarily positive, but neutral - capable of being used for good or evil!
Did you even read the thread? Not one hair metal vocalist mentioned. OK, some metal, but that is to be expected as that genre used to make great use of powerful vocalists. And its a possitive thread, so maybe you could add some names not mentioned who you think qualify.
Lead singer/frontmen with vocal power, energy and stage presence that caught my attention live
Derek Shulman- didn't always hit the note but had power on difficult material to sing, had a swagger and energy, plus sax, bass and recorder
Roger Daltrey
Gino Vannelli-not necessarily to my tastes but he had all the components listed
Joe Jackson-not a lot of movement but the energy and presence was in his delivery
Roy Orbison-all he needed was the vocal power, listen and appreciate
Bono
Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett-local review called him Herman Munster dancing like Peewee Herman
Gord Downie of Tragically Hip- a treasure
others I saw that had it at the time but lost it through the years:
Ian Anderson- PP and Minstrel tours
Phil Collins-WindandW tour
Alice Cooper-Love It To Death tour
and the one I wish I would have seen/heard
Roger Chapman
Peter Gabriel in his younger days.
i have to vote for Bruce Dickinson, and to top it all off the dude can pilot a fuckin' jumbo jet!
Tom Jones from the original post is very swell too.
add Richard Thompson to the list - i swear this guy never ages.
