Progressive Rock for Indie Snobs: A Playlist

8 tracks that will blow your mind, and why they will do just that. (No Genesis, though... the author hates them)

Interesting picks. Cool to see Il Balletto di Bronzo in there
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

Also, Ephemeral Sun: it's a thing and we like making things that might be your thing: https://ephemeralsun.bandcamp.com

The writing's very funny, but I don't think there's anything particularly apt about most of his picks. The Il Balletto and PFM are good choices but that's about it. Not that the rest isn't good, but not so apt for aging indie fans.

I had a friend who was into stuff like Ween and it was irritating.

That was very entertaining, thanks! "the idea of seeing one of these bands suit up in a cardigan sweater and party like it’s 1994 does nothing for you"

Yes, I caught that. I've heard of that band and album, but have never heard them / it. His description actually makes me want to check it out.

It is a wonderfully dark, slightly bonkers Italian progressive album. Still one of my favorites.

It's odd and interesting stuff. Not for everybody. Describable as an Italian version of prog outliers like VDGG or Second Hand.
And Gianni Leone (vocals/keyboards/songs) is, if you can imagine that, what might have resulted if Keith Emerson and Freddie Mercury had been the same person.

Okay, I'm sold. That's a Youtuber for one night in the coming week after the kids are in bed. Looking forward to checking it out.

Il Balletto's Ys is one of the most controversial progressive records of all time - on ALL levels. Read and then let's discuss.

"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

Have you seen of or heard of the Nurse With Wound List? It's not only a baff but a phenomenon, known to most others than "prog" actives.

It's even possible to like/love Genesis/Yes and think that music is going even further. Amazing! Is it even thinkably possible?!

It’s kind of ridiculous prog overkill. Each track is in a different time signature, and sometimes it sounds like piano, organ, harpsichord and Moog are soloing simultaneously, with a layer of Mellotron and freaky synth-sounding guitar riding just underneath. The use of tons of dissonances (lots of diminished chords, whole-tone scales and Devil’s tritones) and the fatalistic art-movie concept (about a lost soul traveling a barren wasteland and having strange, harrowing, expressionistic encounters) ensure that this one is OK for hipsters to not have to pretend to dislike, despite being over-the-top in its ticking boxes of prog tropes otherwise. I went crazy for this when I first discovered it, but I think I killed it by over-playing it, and its lack of nuance almost comes across as gauche to my ears these days.
