    I don't know why I didn't think of that. I'll certainly try!

Interesting topic. Thanks for letting us know. Goodbye Canadian penny. Well, here in the U.S. they have been debating for years over whether to abolish the penny, or keep it in existence. The U.S. Mint would like to stop producing them, while coin collectors want to keep the penny in existence. Canadians have been faced with this very same debate themselves. However, Canada has finally come to a decision on whether to keep their penny or not. Their Mint is going to end production of Canadian pennies sometime in the fall of 2012.

i guess canucks won't be able to offer their 2 cents, for what it's worth. Now we're gonna get a nickle full from them every time.

Can we still only pay a penny for their thoughts?

The Royal Canadian Mint will no longer produce the coins and will in fact begin recycling them for their inherent copper content. The value of the metal in each coin is about 1.5 cents.

Cash transactions will be rounded to nearest 5 cent denomination. Hopefully, Canadians' math will be good enough to avoid violent disagreements. Electronic transactions will be to the exact amount.

Canada is also phasing out money made of paper in favour of money made of a longer lasting polymer. If Americans thought our old bills looked "funny", wait until they see the transparent strips in the new money.

The Canadian penny has officially ceased circulating in the nation to the north. That move has rekindled a debate domestically that has been going on for decades. Check more info here.

As a Canadian, I have to say that I don't miss pennies one bit. My wallet is a lot lighter these days.

As an American, mine is, too, but probably for different reasons.

You know, I packed away that Canadian money and I can't find it now. It will have to wait until I get my new apartment and unpack everything. I am not planning any trips up to B.C. for now, but if a really good band plays there on a weekend, I'll consider a long drive or a short flight, and I'll bring all that change with me (sans the pennies). I am already craving Coffee Crisps again!!!

Take the pennies with you too. The stores won't take them but you can find a charity jar and throw them in there. I'm sure they'll be put to good use.
