    New Peter Blegvad album

Posted by Bob Drake on FB:

'Finished recording basic tracks for the new Peter Blegvad album. L-R: Peter, John Greaves, Karen Mantler, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake. More news to come as it happens!'

    This should be awesome!

Nice! Wonder what Karen Mantler adds to this already great list of musicians, I love all of Blegvad solo material, he is one solid songwriter.

Yeah, that'll be an autobuy for sure.

would love to see him play a few live shows in the northeast...he's one i'd travel for.

Wasn't this planned years ago? I think that Bob announced this on his web-site, but it was cancelled.

I am happy that Karen Mantler is in the team also. She has been my favourite since Tropical Appetites.

Took a long time to get everyone's schedules in synch! Basic tracks are all done, vocals later this month, then mix will probably be in September. L-R: Peter, John Greaves, Karen Mantler, Chris Cutler, Bob Drake.

I just got the album, what a beautiful beutiful album.
Karen`s blissfull hammond acompanying Peter`s quirky songs are a match made in heaven.
The album has the usual Blegvad mix of fine songwriting and wit,
Production is top notch and even blasphemous ""covers"" of songs previously performed by Dagmar (ie King of straw, The unborn Byron oh its sooooooo good ) come accross very very nicely,
Karen adds some nice understated backing vocals , restraint is the order of the day.
The band sounds as organic as it gets, this is definately one of Blegvads best albums overall, and thats saying alot (for me at least).

I have a musician friend in last stages of cancer who has probably a few months to live, he didn't want to be in the band photo of an album he recently sang on, saying "who wants a dead guy on the record cover?" and I said "We are ALL dead people on record covers man!"

She played musical saw on one of John Greaves' last records.

Glad you're enjoying it. Learning Peter's songs is like a lesson in songwriting.

That restraint is definitely part of Peter's thing. Never goes over the top, quite deliberately.

A VERY VERY short excerpt of what I wrote for the book which will accompany the box set:

"Since I was the engineer too, how about some light technical information? When we first set up for rehearsal, we all agreed we didn’t want a fancy production, no doubled or layered guitars for example. We loved the sound we made as a group, just as it was. Thus we recorded the quintet live, all of us in the same room, then overdubbed the vocals, a tambourine and a solo or two afterwards. "

This is as exciting as heck. What a wonderful group of players and folks!

Thank you for doing this Bob!

With love from another dead guy on a record cover :-)

Thanks Mike, it was certainly a pleasure! Hoping this group can do a show or two sometime too...

It was great working with Karen, she knows how to use the Hammond and Leslie. (She played my circa 1940's Hammond through a Leslie 122) And she, like myself, is very aware of the chord voicings we all used, we made sure we never cluttered up the picture. One of our favorite moments (of MANY) as we were playing together is the middle instrumental part of "I Miss You", when Karen and I play the melody together, then she goes up to that high note. We loved doing that! Anyhow, it's a great quintet, which I hope will get together again!

I was glad I hadn't heard those before I learned them from Peter, so they didn't influence my approach in any way. The only Slapp Happy I know was Desperate Straights.

I really hope this has been remedied since
Dont miss out on Live In Japan which is fantastic, a great example how these songs pass thru with minimal production.
Thanks for all the insights from the recording of the album!
Its such a pleasure hearing all these fantastic musicians doing something completely different to what they are expected to do
