Saturday In The Park - Chicago

pretty much anything by the Beatles in the early days:

I Want To Hold Your Hand, etc.
    Eleanore Rigby
    Eight Days A Week
    Day Tripper

    all were huge, smash hits.

to the masses, but not to me: "Call Me Maybe'. That crap was bigger than the universe to the point where celebs & even some political figures were quoting it.

For me (& this is Far from complete)

    My Sharona
    Pop Muzik
    Hey Ya!
I'd Like To Get To Know You
    Jessie's Girl

    * basically any single the Beatles put out. (I would've added them on the original 5, but too easy)

Are we talking albums or singles?

If it's albums, Thriller has to be in there somewhere.

I've never heard this song and I feel fortunate for that fact.

Anyway, I love the music of the Pet Shop Boys so I'll mention "West End Girls."

    Also:
Tears For Fears - "Shout" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World"

'Call Me Maybe' was huge here in the UK as well. Not my taste in pop music. Actually I look at the ones I chose and I see a fair amount of them have that famous 'Wrecking Crew' team on them. I often wonder about session musicians now, where do they get a living given so much pop is now programmed (to my ears anyway).

Just a few that come to mind:

"Do You Believe in Magic," Lovin' Spoonful
"A Hard Day's Night" The Beatles
"Good Vibrations" The Beach Boys (as much as I can't stand them)
"Twistin' the Night Away" Sam Cooke
    "Dock of the Bay" Otis
    "Satisfaction" The Rolling Stones
"That'll Be the Day" Buddy Holly (Although I prefer "Rave ON" and "Brown-eyed Handsome Man")

Mine weren't necessarily a Top 5, just 5 that came to mind immediately- I could list hundreds to be honest. For example I was thinking of putting 'Dock Of The Bay' in mine too.

Good to see Badfinger mentioned. 'Day After Day' is a wonderful song, added to greatly by George Harrison's instantly identifiable guitar (he also produced this track and a few others on that particular album).

There are many examples of "perfect" pop records, and most of them came from the Brill Building era.

I am going a little niche:
    Classical Gas - Mason Williams
Up, Up and Away - 5th Dimension

    For hooks alone:
    Dr Feelgood - Mötley Crüe
Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Been Caught Stealing - Jane's Addiction

Must admit that limiting it to five is difficult!!

More up to date perfection is Snow Patrol´s ´RUN´

    Good call on Rafferty´s ´Baker Street´!
