Thread: My Ambient Guitar Gently Sleeps

Steve, you have the sound here that I've been trying to figure out for years. I need to know exactly how you did this so I can copy you shamelessly and make millions of dollars and be famous worldwide.

It is the obvious answer so I am probably wrong but my hunch is that it is mostly the EHX Synth 9 giving that synth choir-ness.

I fear that if I procured a Synth9 and plugged and played, it would sound like Kraftwerk.

Haha! My mistake, I should have listed the Mel9 in my YouTube description too as well as the Synth9 and Mooer O.M. - and some EHX Canyon Delay also. Good luck with the millions of dollars, if I could get a few more views I'd be happy

I should also give credit to the Valhalla Space Modulator plugin, this can give some amazing choir like sounds - you can get this free when you purchase another of their products which I did when I got the Shimmer - I actually prefer the Space Mod! I've given up with Reverb pedals now and just use these.

I've also just been having fun with the Valhalla Delay plugin, I used the Frippertronics settings as shown by Bill/Chords Of Orion and the hours fly by!

I am listening now. Very nice combos of textures and timbres. I always enjoy all the subtle details floating on the edges. Those details make a huge difference.
    Thank you!!

Anyone here tried to play the Chapman Stick? In the right hands, a beautiful and versatile instrument. One of my friends use it to play ambient:ish stuff, quite popular as he is busking in the public parks in Stockholm.

    Thanks All!

I went thru a phase a few years ago where I was sure I was gonna be a stick player someday. They had just introduced the Railboard at a hugely lower cost than a traditional wood stick, and it looked great and I was gonna get one and be the next Tony Levin. But I didn't. And it proved to be financially unworkable to keep the cost so low (I think they were introduced in the $800 - $900 range), and the price went up to comparable to a traditional stick and that was the end of my dream. I even restrung a guitar as a six string stick to practice.

Playing with the Mood some more. And just added the Earthquaker Devices Afterneath for texturous reverb.

Very nice! The Afterneath was cool!
The added bonus was seeing the magic unfold.

Did you use an Ebow at the beginning?

  19. #219
No eBow. That's sustain via Superego+ in Auto mode. 'Til recently, I've used the superego near the end of the chain, post-looper, in Latch mode, to create drones by latching onto whatever is coming out of the looper. I've had a few people recommend using it at the front of the chain so I thought I'd give it a try.

So what's going on here is dry signal is all the way off, wet is up full. And the attack and decay knobs are around 3 o'clock, like a three or four second arc. So I plays a note, you don't hears what I play, but the superego sustains the note, fades it in and back out. It's grabbing the note with the initial attack, so I'm basically holding my fretting finger in place, sometimes even vibratoing, just out of habit.

Ah! Very cool. That fading in is what made me think it was an EBow.

Congrats on a great live performance..a bit curious, no crowd noise anywhere. There's always at least one guy that has to keep talking and let everyone know about what they bought at the store. errrrr!
Or you just mesmerized everyone with this great piece.

Combination of very small crowd and I mixed the room noise (it's a combination of room noise from the camera and a direct recording) really low here. Check the soundcloud link (where I mixed the room noise much higher) for lots of chatter and floorboards creaking and trains in the distance.

    Thanks for listening!
