Brett William Kull - Open Skies Exploding

I'm kind of surprised this album didn't get it's own thread here months ago. My searches turned up nothing but maybe that's just a personal problem.

This album really grew on me from the first moment I heard it. Initially I was thinking it's more of a subdued singer/songwriter album of moody tunes. And at it's heart that's somehow still what it is, but it has revealed itself more and more with repeated listenings. Maybe this wouldn't be most people's choice for the gym, but I listen to it when I'm on the bike or treadmill. There are so many beautiful layers to this thing and hearing this in headphones is a treat for the ears. On one level it's raw and stripped down, on another it's layered with harmonic subtleties. Or something like that.

I assume many of you have it. What do you think?

I'm kind of obsessed with how good it sounds. It's just so warm and the songs are moving. It's not prog by any means but really just well done folky rock I guess for lack of a better descriptor. I definitely reached out for repeated listens on this one more than any of his previous albums but that might just be me and how it appeals to me right now.

Brett mixed a song by us a few years/albums back and as I hear his stuff, Echolyn's and Fractal Mirror's albums, if 3RDegree gets a bit more "organic" (overused word I know) sounding in the future, he's the first call I make as I think he's proven his worth as a producer/engineer clear on these releases.

I'm really happy with Brett's new album. Unfortunately I haven't had the time for a deep listening session, but I can say there is a very warm feeling to the album.

I didn't think much of it on first play, but now I'm really, really enjoying it. Some of the hooks have started to stick. Very natural, well recorded sound that doesn't fatigue the ear. Lovely work!

I believe so. Not my favorite way to acquire music, but it was worth making an exception.

I emailed Brett suggesting a vinyl release, since it clocks in at around 39 min, but didn't get a response. I like all of the songs a lot, and they flow nicely.

[slaps forehead] I forgot all about this one! He was releasing it a few songs at a time over the holidays. Thought I'd wait until all the songs were up, and I forgot all about it! Gonna pick it up very soon!

This somehow skirted under my ill-equipped radar, possibly due to the download only format, but... I have a feeling it's something I'll relate to.

Great to hear people are enjoying this. I can't imagine why they wouldn't other than possibly because it's not prog.

Yeah, great album, as should be expected from Kull. It does seem to have flown a bit under the radar, though.

On a related topic, what do you guys think about the Valdez album?

Thanks for the info, I didn't know about this. Kull and Echolyn have disappeared off my radar over the last few years.

And although I may be biased, I believe it's well worth a listen!

I saw discussion of the album some time ago and I must've assumed it was already out at that time. Thanks for the heads up.
