I first heard Chris Cornell's voice on the Jesus Christ Pose single, on which he gave 110 percent and then some. My favourite tracks are probably Hunger Strike and Reach Down from the overlooked Temple of the Dog album. His contribution to the Casino Royale soundtrack is as good as, if not better than, any of the classic Bond themes, including those performed by Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Carly Simon, Paul McCartney & Wings and the list goes on. I remember a girl on another forum saying she found him irresistably attractive - he had it all. If this was suicide, as conjectured, I do not understand it at all.

People may get treatment for depression, but it never goes away completely. Mental illnesses are chronic, lifelong conditions.

I've heard that if you stop or run out of anti-depressant medication, the effects don't always just taper off - you can go abruptly crashing into the cellar. Your system may get used to the effects of the medication, and its removal causes a large reaction. Chris was on tour. So if he was on anti-depressants, and if he ran out, with no opportunity to quickly and easily refill his prescription....

Band around the neck. Shades of Kevin Gilbert.

Sad news. Young guy, talented, did good AND his kids are just hitting their teen years... very sad.

The song "Room A Thousand Years Wide" always reminded me of VDGG (I know it isn't a Cornell song).

Kevin died 21 years ago today.

However, it is unclear at this moment if Cornell's death was due to the same accidental parameters as Kevin's, or if Cornell simply chose to end his own life voluntarily.

This out of a Detroit station:

DETROIT (WJBK) - The Wayne County Medical Examiner has confirmed the cause of death for rocker Chris Cornell as hanging by suicide.

Cornell was found dead just after midnight on Thursday in his hotel room at MGM Grand in Detroit. Hours earlier, he had played what would be his final show at the Fox Theatre.

Sources tell FOX 2 Cornell hung up on his wife at 11:35 p.m., and she called a body guard to check in on him. We're told the body guard forced opened the hotel room door and found Cornell unresponsive on the bathroom floor. A doctor at the hotel pronounced the 52-year-old deceased.

No matter what you thought about his music, there was no denying the incredible talent of his voice.

Sometimes people think reaching the top will solve all their problems. It is a big shock when they realize they don't.

Being on the top, you also incur many other problems with that fame.

Apparently he hung himself. What a shame...

As a society we need to remove the stigma of mental health issues. People need to understand that being open about their tendencies and taking the meds (not specifically talking about Cornell) make them a better version of themselves. The whole urban myth of "I'll be less creative" on medicine is something we need to quit romanticizing. Alcohol and/or other self medication can really play havoc so if he could talk about it openly, people would be more likely to protect him rather than tempt him.

Well, he DID talk about it openly, quite often. Though from what I've seen never really in the present tense (always talking about his drug use and emotional issues as "past"). In any case, it's very sad and such a waste.

That's my favourite too. I love the experimental stuff on it ("Applebite" by Matt Cameron) and the psychedelic vibes. Great songs by Ben Shepherd and Chris.

Rest In Peace Chris. Terrible news.

Yes. But they appear in the manner of "self-medication" because there's a condition to be dealt with in the first place. Depression doesn't disappear if one comes clean from the substances of self-medication. On the contrary, when quit there's usually an intense and overwhelming feeling of loss as to the release those substances may have brought. Depression is not merely a sense of mind or imagination - it's often a profoundly physical state of abstract pain.

And death - to some - offers surrogate guise to that release one misses, sometimes in a disturbingly impulsive whim. The fact that seemingly 'Ok-doing' folks can apparently all of a sudden choose to abandon their loved ones in the most terrible fashion possible, leaves an everlasting scar of ambivalence with those left behind. Guilt, responsibility and the devastating notion of complete helplessness comes into play as does the impression of existential futility at large. If you're no longer afraid of death, you're essentially neither in awe at the contents of life - this is the argument.

Of course, it can be turned the other way around; love of life renders the realization of its temporality unbearable, so by defying its law one captures eternity - though only for oneself alone.
"Improvisation is not an excuse for musical laziness" - Fred Frith
"[...] things that we never dreamed of doing in Crimson or in any band that I've been in," - Tony Levin speaking of SGM

The wife and I still cannot process the news. Played Euphoria Morning earlier today.

Rest in Peace Chris. Alive in the superunknown.

You still are my fave singer from that era and one of my favorite's of all time.

If you focus on negativity and glorify it by not focusing on the solution, it will get you eventually. Kind of hits close to home because I use to party with Soundgarden in the 80s. I didn't like the way the grunge lyrics were often doom and gloom.

I don't think that the arts up until the last 100 years or so were meant to focus on the negative, but on the solution, on beauty.

    RIP

Just got home from work, great day that's now shit. Soundgarden were the only so-called grunge band I cared about.

This part just freaks the shit out of me - "One line, which at the time seemed innocuous, sticks: “I feel bad for the next city,” Cornell said over the mic. The quote came just after mentioning that nothing could ever top Detroit. Now, it has a much deeper, heartbreaking meaning."

    Wow!

All i can do is what i am doing at the present time, cranking the shit out of Badmotorfinger and remembering the great music he gave us.

this. and then he apparently broke into singing the old hymn “in my time of dying”. people could have mistaken it for a little zep tribute. the sadness levels are rising.

people, take care of yourselves and each other. that's all one can do.
