    Nina Simone recommendations

Lately I have been diving into some classic Jazz (Coltrane, Davis, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald e.a. ) While I like most of it, it is Nina Simone which really hits a special button with me. Damn, what a talent she was! Never I have heared such an amazing voice combined with such skilfull piano playing.

I now own an Essential original album box which contains:
    - Little Girl blue
    - Nina Simone sings Ellington
    - Nina Simone at town hall (holy moly WHAT an live album!!!)
    - The amazing Nina Simone
    - Nina Simone at Newport
    - Forbidden fruit

So what other albums do I need? "Pastel blues" and "the high priestress of soul" are already on my shortlist but what else? What about the stuff she did in the 70ies, 80ies and 90ies?

Love the scene in '99's Thomas Crown Affair at the end when they use her penultimate track "Sinnerman"!

Ever see "Point Of No Return" with Bridgette Fonda and Gabriel Byrne? Nina Simone's music plays a prominent role throughout that movie. Fonda's character even gets the nickname, 'Nina', because of her character's appreciation of Simone's music.

Great debut album, released under a variety of titles and labels. 'My Baby Just Cares For Me', from this album, for whatever reason became a big UK hit, 30 years later. (Some of her others like 'Feelin' Good' also became popular here, decades after their release.) There were three other songs recorded at these sessions which are on some CDs.

I'm not really familiar with her other albums per se. She was on several record labels...from memory, Bethlehem, Colpix, Philips and RCA over just the one decade!

I am thinking of buying this Box:
    https://www.discogs.com/Nina-Simone-...elease/8841822

it contains 'in concert' and 'The high priestress of soul' so it looks a addition to the box I already have.

That's her Philips work. I think there's a similar box of her RCA work.

This seems to have replaced the Four Women box set, which is the version I have. Four Women condenses the same material onto four CDs, two albums on each disc except for High Priestess of Soul, which has a disc to itself but is augmented by a non-LP single that is omitted from the 7-CD version. Either way, the Phillips material is indispensable, classic stuff. My own introduction to Nina was this LP:

Look for the Netflix documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone?" You'll learn a lot about her.

I just have her Philips and RCA Best Ofs. I probably need more. Her voice is profound, as is her piano playing. Love her rendition of “Wild Is the Wind,” the definitive version for me!

    This.

That is why I like her best with voice and piano upfront.

love a lot of her 60's stuff especially.

Of course people like Muse, George Michael and Kimbra have covered her (or even her arrangements).

    Love this piece
