Best Live Rock Band Ever. And it's not even close.

C'mon. Don Alias. Pat Metheny. Jaco. Michael Brecker. Lyle Mays. Show me a rock band with more talented musicians. It's not even remotely close. Oh, and the singer.

    Trio of Doom

EDIT: Misread title. Was thinking about the most talented band that hit a stage in the rock/fusion genre. They were horrible in their only live appearance in Havana, but pretty hard to out-talent a trio of John McLaughlin, Jaco Pastorius and Tony Williams...

Apex musicianship. Expertly played. It does nothing for me. (And Brecker's SNL saxisms are cringe-inducing). I'll take Blue, thanks. Pass....

Certainly a sick band. Best? Probably not - there is no such thing. Off the top of my head, there are a few Zappa bands that are equally as stunning if not more so. And Henry Cow. And Magma. And Hatfield, National Health, etc etc. List goes on broski.

Not sure about the best ever, but i agree, a ridiculously talented band! ANY band with Jaco in it in my opinion rates as one of the best ever!

Hard to judge because there are many more in the haven't seen category then the have seen.

Of the bands I've seen, the best ever has got to be Gojira from France. I've never seen a crowd so involved at a show nor a band so tight and energetic.
Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!

Is it a rock band though?

    Gojira is serious rock!

After posting I remembered how great Baroness were live and want to nominate them as well.

    And then Mastodon ...

Duncan's going to make a Horns Emoticon!!!

I saw then when they opened for ELP many moons ago.
I had never heard of the band.
Never have I been blown away more than after that performance.
Most likely the best live performance I've seen....

Magma are great performers, however at the venue I saw them, NearFest, the audience impact was ho-hum. Same with Koenjihayykei, great performers but medium audience.

I dunno if I would even call that lineup a rock band. Great jazz musicians yes. But definitely not a rock band.

True. Joni in this era (Don Juan/Mingus/Miles) was pretty far removed from rock, aside from the (not very good) Elvis cover on the live album. It was also the greatest stuff she ever did.

Nitpick: "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" was a Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers cover. Her Elvis cover ("You're So Square, Baby I Don't Care") was on the following studio album.

Obviously this person has never seen 'Tony Orlando & Dawn' tear up a stage.
