    Raphael Weinroth Browne-INCREDIBLE electric cellist

Probably a new name for most here, but this supremely talented musician from Ottawa, Ontario, is making waves north of the border. He is involved in multiple projects, many of them very progressive in nature (The Visit, Musk Ox, etc). He has also done many multi-tracked-cello covers of prog metal band material, such as Opeth. Here he is performing an amazing brand new solo composition, entitled Ricercare. Truly, someone to keep an eye on.

I have one Musk Ox album. Will have to dig it up and give it a fresh spin. I don't recall any electric cello on it. I believe I filled it in the post-rock section of my collection.

Well, true, he doesn't just play electric. Here is a great clip with Heather Sita Black on vocals from The Visit. Very atmospheric.

Cello is on of my favourite instruments. Thanks for posting this - from my own hometown.

Oh yeah, should have mentioned. His playing his sublime. I would love to hear him play some After Crying.

There were two unrelated Musk Oxen in recent years: a defunct Toronto-based band led by banjo player Mike Smith, and an Ottawa-based band led by guitarist Nathanael Larochette. Both very good, but very different.

I blame Wynton, what was the question?

    That was me!!!

Raph is an amazing guy. Incredibly humble and an amazing talent. He is also involved in "new music" here in Ottawa bringing in avant acts. Plays Toronto quite regularly and Montreal on occasion. Very lucky to have someone of that talent in Ottawa
who we can see quite often and in tiny venues.

Saw him tonight in Toronto. Immense playing and song writing skills. He held the appreciative crowd, in complete attention. Not an easy thing, for solo cello in a rock club. You could just hear his prog-metal influences in some the riffs from the material that he played.

More news on Raphael. from Leprous Facebook page :

"Last year we went to yell on the local support in Ottawa, ON, for playing too long. Instead we ended up being completely floored by the musicianship and emotion from this young gentleman. We're very happy to announce that we're collaborating with the amazing Raphael Weinroth-Browne on the new album. — with David Castillo, Einar Solberg and Raphael Weinroth-Browne."

    What's Raphael up to now?

After completing Euro tour with Leprous he has a new release called Kamancello (actually released just before tour). It is a duo of Shahriyar Jamshidi on kamanche (Iranian bowed string instrument) and Raphael Weinroth-Browne on cello. It is certainly an East-meets-West (Kurdish-Iranian and Western) that has been pretty amazing to see live.

    Here's them recording last April
