The most beautiful songs ever written

It's a beautiful warm summer day here and while reading this morning I put on Sandy Denny's Like An Old Fashioned Waltz. When the title track came on I couldn't help but put the book down and listen to the lyrics and music. When she sings "violins play from behind garden walls" and the strings come in it sends chills down my spine. What a beautifully written, sung and played song. Give me some of your most beautiful songs ever written.

    Rick

If I'm not careful this one can tear my heart out and leave me crying.

Great call on the Laura Nyro song, man, she was amazing.

Wow! I saw this on my way to posting "He's A Runner" by the original Italian goddess.

Seeing her live is every bit as important to me historically as seeing Hendrix, Morrison or Joplin.

I love the way this fits together from parts that seem totally at odds with each other. It's not a tune you'd ever pick out on a piano, yet I find myself humming it all the time.

I was going to say Roberta Flack's "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face".

Great call on the Judee Sill, Kerry! I love this version from The Old Grey Whistle Test... just piano and vocal.

In my top 50 albums of all time.

If we're talking strictly about popular/rock music I'll also give a shout out to both "You've Lost That Lovin Feelin" and "Soul & Inspiration" by the Righteous Bros.

Also Rachmaninoff's 18th Variation on a Theme by Paganini that was usurped and turned into "A Story of Three Loves" for the movie soundtrack of the same name still gives me chills whenever I hear it.

Restricting to rock, and to the songs that I still hear with my breath held

Does it matter that this waste of time is what makes a life for you?

Joni Mitchell's original rendition is wonderful, but, for me, Tom Rush's cover is sublime.YMMV.

For instrumental tunes outside of "rock".This still blows me away.Every time.
