Anyway, you guys clearly have interest in birds based on your feeder talk. Do you ever go out looking for birds at parks or preserves? There are SO many species out there to discover beyond the goldfinches and cardinals. I went to my local park this morning and had 41 species including a Common Gallinule (rare for us), Yellow Warblers. Warbling Vireos, Greater Yellowlegs, Red-shouldered Hawk, Virginia Rail and Northern Waterthrushes.
I walk or hike 5 miles a day and see a lot of birds. I don’t have your vocabulary though. I’ll take more bird pics and post here. Sometimes far away, but color can be amazing like this bluebird:

This is significant for me as a Marylander:

Someone in my neighborhood proudly posted that he'd seen his first Oriole of the season, and took a picture with his phone:

    I didn't have the heart...

Ha! We have a local birder here that is wrong a lot. It’s gotten comical partly because of his arrogance.

Anyway, I had a Baltimore Oriole today and yesterday. I had a Orchard Oriole on Saturday.

You are correct. My mistake. As I was typing it, it didn't feel right.

Hehehe. I got excited yesterday thinking that I'd seen two Orioles fly through my yard. As they turned around and came back, however, I realized they were only Cardinals.

    Damned Orioles.

Never around when you want them.

The pride of Baltimore, yet a successful viewing is rare.

t's hard to understand why Marylanders are so proud of them.

And then there's the bird, with the same name

I remember when I was a kid my aunt would put out rippings of bed sheets for them to make nests from.

Hey, look at it this way. It's the end of April and they don't have a losing record.

Where I used to live in the East Bay, we used to have a pair of Bullock’s orioles that nested in a tree in the backyard. They used to like visiting the hummingbird feeder, which was a bit comical, because they were WAY too big for the feeder. It would swing back and forth when they landed, sending hummingbird food sloshing out. And they would have to contort themselves in ridiculous positions to get any nectar.

Yup, thanks for the correction. It's been so long since we bought it I forgot what the word looked like! And you're absolutely right - we have several preserves in our area, accessible by both foot and bike from our house, but we use them exclusively for exercise. We should do some dedicated birding trips.

On another topic, I think I've mentioned in this thread that I've heard a chickadee outside our School of Music building that has an unusual three-note call. This morning I finally managed to get a recording. Pretty lo-fi, but you can definitely hear "Three Blind Mice" from him/her. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to upload a short .m4a file.

I must say you lot over the pond seem to have much more colourful birds than we do in the old country! Our goldfinch is one of our more colourful birds, but still relatively dull compared with its American cousin.

One thing they do have in common though is that they both seem to love the sunflower hearts...it's like crack cocaine to the ones that visit my feeder every day

And the American bird scene pales in comparison with the Australian, or (particularly) the African.

^^ In Australia, farmers will kill wild cockatoos en masse to prevent them destroying their crops. A crying shame to say the least.

Stupid Starlings are eating me out of house and home. I switched all our feeders to Safflower today. The Starlings are pretty mad right now. They keep coming to the feeder and then flying away. Hopefully they'll get trained to not come around as much so I can eventually switch back to my usual seed. It worked last year.

The orioles are back! I can hear them in my neighborhood. I have a dark pink crab apple tree in full bloom, so the timing is perfect. They love the blossoms. I'll set up the tripod and try to get some shots. The only problems are that they like the tree tops (backlighting) and they never sit still.

    We'll see.

Got them in my neighbors ancient apple tree.

The last one is in-flight when he took off.

Great shots! I spotted one in our neighbour's tree today as well. And it wasn't cardinal this time. I'm 100% sure of it. . I cleaned our Oriole feeder and will put it out tomorrow since it was pouring rain right after I cleaned it. I hung half an orange from our feeder pole though, so hopefully we'll see more than just a fleeting glimpse of them.

Orioles are such beautiful birds. I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen one around my house.
