^^ Really. That's one of the more common birds around these parts.

I see sparrows all the time but I don’t recall seeing one of them. But obviously I don’t stand at my back door 24 hours a day looking at the birds so I’m sure they’ve been out there I just don’t recall seeing one. He kept blinking his eyes.

I've been watching these bird cams lately. I really love it. Both are located locally.

We get a lot of different types of sparrows. My favourites are the white-crowned sparrows. But I don't see a lot of chipping sparrows around here - just the odd one.
A couple of summers ago, my Mom was over for lunch and we were sitting in the backyard. She commented on the sparrows, but to her they all looked the same. I started identifying them and showing her how they were different. Now she's fascinated by them. She throws handfuls of bird food on her deck and tries to identify them as they hop around eating.
We have a bunch of the chipping sparrows as of a week or so.
Early migrators or coming through in small flocks. Little brown jobs that flit around for a day or two and then take off.
Saw a Pileated woodpecker yesterday, pretty cool. Not too common in this neighborhood. I have seen them more often down south ( SW Fla ).

Birds and more galore in this new series.
Looks like they're beginning to recommend that we stop filling bird feeders and birdbaths for a couple of months to stop the spread of the latest avian flu.

What's the best shrub to attract humming birds?
I'm looking for something that-
a) Flowers for a long time,
b) Requires minimal maintenance, and
c) Can stand mid-Atlantic winters
d) Deer-resistant
I'm busy "Googling", but will appreciate peoples' personal experiences.

^^ Good luck with the deer-resistant part. Not sure what it's like in your parts, but here, they eat just about everything. I blew 250 bucks on three hollies which got devoured.
That's what happens when we take away their habitats.

We have a few butterfly bushes that attract hummingbirds.
Yep - that's my fear.
I did something similar a long time ago - spent days preparing a rose garden, spent $$ (don't remember how much, but a lot) on carefully selected, well established roses, planted them, and was really looking forward to tending the rose garden my wife so badly wanted.
The next morning, those expensive, lush rose bushes looked like so many celery sticks
This time, I won't invest as much time and effort until I've confirmed that the deer will leave them alone. There's a family of 5 deer that think my yard is in fact their yard - so it won't take long to find out.
Thanks for those links. I've spent time on Google, and the bushes I've found so far gel with those in the lists you sent. I particularly liked the https://dnr.maryland.gov/wildlife/pa...humbutbee.aspx site, as that is area-specific. (Presumably, relevant to your area too?)
Hoping to get humming birds for the first time...

Duncan
We had a pair hollies inside our pool fence for 25 years or more, then suddenly the seemingly healthy male plant just died, no idea why. When I tore it out after a month or two the wood was no longer green even down to the roots. Supposedly there needs to be a male plant in the vicinity for the female to produce berries, so some neighbor must have one, because the other plant continues to put out berries as well as ever, making the birds happy.

Happy with what I have to be happy with.
