For me Juncos are to winter what Robins are to spring. I know winter has arrived when the Juncos appear. And they leave around the same time we start to see the Robins.
You can't miss their call. It's very unique. Well all birds are but theirs is exceptional. Very pretty bird

Maybe I've never heard them because in the winter I have the windows closed. I'm not far from you.

The Tufted Titmouses (or is it Titmice?) have been especially noisy this week.

They're noisy all year 'round. The House Wrens have arrived and they are very chatty. It's the damn grackles at my house that won't shut the hell up. The Red-winged Blackbirds also make a racket. Soon the Gray Catbirds will be here making noise. I personally can't wait for the Wood Thrushes and Veerys. Both have awesome calls.

Sounds like you've been hanging out in my backyard.

The Gray Catbirds crack me up, because it sounds like they're calling my wife, Karen.

Funny you say that. I tease my son Cameron that they're calling his name. It also works for Jerry.

Funny, too. I was going to tell my neighbor's kid that when the animals start calling your name, bad things are going to happen. His name is Jarrod. I didn't want to traumatize him, though.

Thrushes have beautiful songs. We have the hermit thrush and Swainson’s thrush out West, both of which are some of my favorite bird songs. Red-winged blackbirds always reminded me of playing in the neighborhood in the summer as a kid, a very nostalgic song.

The red-shouldered Hawks have been super-noisy lately. I recently spotted a red-tailed hawk on a street light recently, as well as a sharp-shinned hawk (just a little fella!) by the roadside within the past week.

I've tried to attract hummingbirds a few times. All I get are ants.

My information is that you need to plant "Cardinal Flower" - I understand they're like crack for humming birds.

I'll be going to the nursery to find one in the next few days...

Once again, my early morning household activities are accompanied by the sound of my local red bellied woodpeckers.

I heard my first Oriole of the year this weekend. Haven't been able to spot him, yet.

Hell - I live in Maryland, and almost never see them.

I saw a few just south of DC some years ago, but never where I live.

(They don't always put on much of a show at Camden Yards, either )

From the bizarre world of twitchers:

A bird that is common to all you Americans is causing a pilgrimmage to one of the remotest Scottish islands, because it is the first time one has turned up in Europe.

It will be here for a few weeks. I'll hear him singing from the treetops and, if I'm lucky, I'll get to see him through my binoculars. It's really cold and windy right now, so I don't expect him to be singing much.

Opened the back door a couple hours ago and saw a big beautiful male blue jay hanging off the hedge by our driveway. We didn't see them this far west for decades but now I always see one or two every summer.
