    RIP Misha Mengelberg

I suppose some lovers of jazz will know him, so I decided to bring the news that just reached me, that Misha Mengelberg has died today. I can't find information on his dead in English at this moment, so I'll do with this:

I saw him several times, back in the Eighties and Nineties. Portland has an avant-jazz appreciation society, which was pretty active during those years, and they brought him over here back then, both with the ICP Orchestra and as part of smaller groups. Great player, at his peak, and he was apparently also an important figure in Dutch avant-classical circles before he turned completely to jazz. I'm surprised at how (relatively) young he was - he came across as the oldest and grouchiest Grouchy Old Man ever, although that was apparently a consequence of early-onset Alzheimer's. Because of his illness, he couldn't tour any more for the last few years, and Guus Jansen replaced him in the ICP.
