Modern Proggy Indie Rock Recs - REDUX

    Hey all,

Back in late 2008, I had started a thread (archived now) for recommendations for music that was often identified as indie-rock to the mass audience, but could often have a proggy bend, sometimes electronic and/or keyboard heavy, etc.

It was a great success, with lots of thoughtful recommendations, and the thread ran for several years.

I'd like to start it back up again by listening some of my favorites that I have accumulated over the last 8 years and see if we can't get the ball rolling again.

Let's not get into a genre fight...please. The prog, indie, electronic, post-rock, metal and/or rock content in this kind of thread tends to vary greatly and the discussion tended to be rather inclusive. No need to pigeonhole it.

That said, to get a flavor of the variety of music for discussion, here is a list of the top 25 or so that I've really gotten to enjoy over the years.

    Arcade Fire
    Archive
    The Dear Hunter
    Kiev
    Magyar Posse
    Massive Attack
    Mew
    Minus the Bear
    Muse
    Oceansize
    Of Montreal
    Ours
    Pinback
    Portugal. The Man
    Pure Reason Revolution
    Radiohead
    RX Bandits
    Stereolab
    Tame Impala
    The Mars Volta
    The Pineapple Thief
    The Reign of Kindo
    The Sound of Animals Fighting
    The Timeout Drawer
    Three Mile Pilot
    Zero 7

I'll get the ball rolling with one of my favorites: Archive.

Archive was around in the 90s as more of a trip-hop band, went through a sort of Floydian period, and in later albums a bit more Radiohead. Controlling Crowds came out in 2009, and was a culmination of their work to date. It remains probably my favorite album.

If you like Massive Attack, Porcupine Tree, Radiohead, and Floyd, try this band out.

The extensive use of keys and electronics within the modern rock vibe (which can be heavily guitar oriented) is what has usually kept my interest over the years.

There are too many tracks I enjoy to share them all.

Have you ever listened to Wolf People?
I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say that they're progressive rock, but they certainly have elements of it in their folky/indie rock sound.
    I recommend the album Fain.

Hopefully this fits some of the criteria you're venturing for.

The Decemberists' Crane Wife has a seriously "Roundabout" indented jam. Seriously -- give that song a deep listen. This article is about the follow-up album but is apropos to this thread.

My pick for neo-prog buried treasure is USAISAMONSTER's Space Programs. Top to bottom excellence.

I posted in your original thread & then noticed this recent one - d'oh!

Apologies for the self-promotion, but we've written an album that is very much similar in style to the likes of Oceansize, Mew, Radiohead, etc. Any peeps looking for similar music may like to check it out:

Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche was mentioned in the last thread. They have a new album out this year and it is, dare I say, even more nuts than the last one. Kind of a fusion between kraut, post-rock, and funk. Here is their bandcamp:

Some Alex guy from London used to run a blog back in 2009 and 2010. For some reasons, he stopped blogging, but the blog is still up and running. He had some recommendations and I found each and every one extremely refreshing and rewarding. These were bands I did not know at the time, but enjoyed tremediously ever since.

    http://londontunes.blogspot.ca/

Check posts in December 2009 and the first one in January 2010. I wish this guy kept at it. As far as I am concerned, we were really in synch and I thoroughly enjoyed all his recommendations.

Oh and yeah, Kiev is really great.

Seeing as Oceansize are included in the first post then I feel obliged to add Mike Vennart's solo effort The Demon Joke. If you like Oceansize then it's worth checking out Mike's stuff.

Thanks to Scrotum Scissor's recommendation from the earlier indie/prog thread I was introduced to UK band Thumpermonkey.

I'm not sure what was included in the original thread, but here's a few recommendations:

The Dears - No Cities Left (echoes of brit pop, mixed in with proggy stylings)
Apparatjik - We Are Here (spin off from Mew/Aha)
Grammatics - Self Titled (amazing album from sadly now-defunct UK band)
The Electric Soft Parade (also now defunct, but great pop songs mixed in with proggy stylings)
Kaddisfly - Horses Galloping on Sailboats / Set Sail The Prairie (also defunct I think - waaaah!)
Lost In the Trees - A Church That Fits Our Needs (radiohead-ish, a heart-breaking album)
Lukestar - Lake Toba (should appeal to Mew/pixies fans)
O'Brother - Garden Window (pretty decent)
People In Planes - As Far As The Eye Can See (also defunct)
Sweet Billy Pilgrim - Motorcade Amnesiacs (Had hints of The Dears)
The Velvet Teen - All Albums, but particularly 'Elysium' (Love this band!)

kind of a favorite style, semantics are varied. "progressive college rock," is 1 way I like to describe it.

    But it's a WIDE umbrella.

I'm not going to post 87 or even 26 bands for people to check out. But I suppose just to throw a few in the hat for now.

Small Leaks, Sink Ships - Face Yourself and Remove Your Sandals was my #1 record in 2015. They're sort of Post/Math Rock at times, reminding me of Menomena and maybe the early Murder by Death at points. Very much anticipating their next record, expected in 2017.

Fjokra - The guy/band with so much potential. Blending a ton of influences styles (Prince, Devin Townsend, Duran Duran, Queen, Kevin Gilbert, Big Band Jazz, Lounge/Trance music) including some Rap. But the songwriting is a huge part of what has my attention about Fjokra. Their 1st new single in a few years drops on April 24th.

The Family Crest - Maybe the most exciting band doing the Chamber Rock/Pop/Folk thing the last few years. A very big sound, somewhat like The Dear Hunter but also Sufjan Stevens or Margot and the Nuclear So and So's.

Major Parkinson - Their singer sounds almost like Liam Neeson at 1st, but he can grow on you and the band as well. The song "The Wheelbarrow" from their last record is as great and progressive a track I've heard the last few years.

Some names here I'll have to check out (thanks in advance):

    Kiev
    The Timeout Drawer
    Three Mile Pilot
    Semistereo
Avec le soleil sortant de sa bouche
    Lukestar
    The Black Light
    Deep Sea Diver
    The Drill
    Floating Points
    Thunder Tillman

What are your feelings about the new Flaming Lips release "Oczy Mlody" ? I have been listening on and off, and though there are really interesting moments of great instrumentation and sound manipulation, the basic core melodies are, as usual, so simplistic. It's not like Radiohead who work off of complex themes to start and build to climaxes or cruise with a destination in mind. And it's not like the new Claypool/Lennon album with basic progressive structures to the songs. It is more like Mono or Russian Circles who use sound as an emotional device.
But I still found it much different and more substantial and interesting than most Flaming Lips albums.

Project RnL is a precursor to Anakdota. Astonishing musicianship reminds me of early Echolyn. (Israel 2013)

Been wondering when those guys will come out with a studio or live album of some kind. I first heard of Eyal Amir when I saw a video he and his band at the time made of a math-rock version of Taylor Swift's song "22", and it was pretty cool.

I like Ray Livnat's vocals, even if they may be something of an acquired taste. That Anakdota CD is top-notch too.
