For a second I thought this was about the survivor contestant. Thankfully it isn't because he doesn't deserve an RIP page. Anyway, RIP Richard.

The original Battlestar Galactica were shown as 'films' at the cinema here. They were disappointing because of the low budget, and should just have been shown on TV as intended. The cast including Richard Hatch were not at fault. There was a series of books which were good, so I gave up on the 'films' and continued with the novels. I saw the cast, including Richard Hatch as Apollo, in my mind's eye as I read them. He was only 71, so died relatively young, consistent with the stars of 2016.

Not really "Low Budget" for their time, as I recall, the original series was not renewed per the cost of the production was too expensive for the network to maintain.

in comparison to ratings -- thats how I remembered its cancellation ( i was a fan back then)...'78 BSGs ratings were mediocre --- had it been in the top 5, ABC may have renewed but with the show being so expensive compared to its lukewarm ratings, it was cancelled.....a good bulk of the props and sets were sold to NBC for the Buck Rogers TV Show

I've seen episodes. Wasn't he the one with the cigar going? How did they get Lorne Greene to do that series? Apollo has gone to the stars. RIP.
The older I get, the better I was.

I saw a rerun of that old Buck Rogers show and knew I'd recognized some space craft and a few other props from BSG. ABC tried to revive BSG in 1980 but the writing was lame (or should I say lamer) and the two actors replacing Starbuck and Apollo were a pair of stiffs.

Anyway, I loved the show as a kid. RIP Apollo.

Are you sure you're not thinking of just the pilot episode, which had a limited theatrical release in Sensurround?

It could well be the case. I do not know what sensurround is, or whether we had such a thing. Provincial cinemas were fairly basic in those days.

Sensurround was that effect where they used super heavy bass to get a rumbling, vibrating feeling. It was used in theaters for movies like Earthquake, Roller Coaster, etc. A gimmick basically. With BG they used it when the ships were flying around. Despite the fact that space is a vacuum

I don't remember the loud bass. They probably just released it in cinemas with no gimmicks. My memory is of poor quality explosions, as befits TV. Didn't they just use the same explosion repeatedly?

Probably. Hey, it was a rag-tag fugitive fleet, what do you expect?

You're right and weren't they trying to get back to Earth from somewhere? I expected Lorne Greene to be dressed as a cowboy and struggled to accept him in his space costume.
