Thread: Zappa Question

    Zappa Question

I saw this interesting BBC Zappa documentary from 1993 and at one point you see a couple of minutes from a "private" session with The Chieftains, Johny Guitar Watson and some Tuvan throat singers. Are the any audio traces available from these sessions?

    Watch it and hear it
Ps, there are a couple more videos like this; can't remember which one, but you can also find Johnny Guitar Watson playing guitar with them...

I think there is some good stuff being preserved from the vault from all those sessions.

I also have a question regarding Frank Zappa's music...

Could someone tell me which of his 70s albums were 80% or more instrumental?

    I have
    Hot Rats
    Burnt Weenie
    Weasels
    Wazoo
    Waka Jawaka
    Sleep Dirt
Why is it whenever someone mentions an artist that was clearly progressive (yet not the Symph weenie definition of Prog) do certain people feel compelled to snort "thats not Prog" like a whiny 5th grader?

You should have Uncle Meat, too. That's got like 3 songs (and for once, the lyrics are obnoxious satire), and a few spoken word bits, but otherwise, it's a double LP of instrumentals. Well, the CD edition has two stupid "penalty tracks" on the second disc, but you shouldn't be without tracks like the Uncle Meat theme, Dog Breath, Legend Of The Golden Arches, Nine Types Of Industrial Pollution, and most especially the LP side length King Kong.

And yeah, I know you said 70's era albums, but Uncle Meat is really a great record. So is Lumpy Gravy, which goes even further back, that one also has spoken word bits, but again is by and large mostly instrumental music.

Not surprising. Groening sat in on Frank's last major interview, which was done for a special magazine that the publishers of Guitar Player and Keyboard magazines put out right before Frank went home.

Studio Tan is >50% instrumental and 100 % essential.
cf also Road tapes #2 (Helsinki 1973), Wazoo (Boston 1972), Little Dots (Petit Wazoo tour 1972)

This refers to the first CD edition, remixed by FZ (= UMe 2012). The original mix, along with many outtakes and no penalty tracks, is available on Meat Light. This is the one to get.

JAZZ FROM HELL (1986).............100% jazz fusion but oddly, won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
Frank's venture into the synclavier has some incredible moments..............have you ever heard a grand piano bend a note ?

Nothing odd about that. The NARAS does that all the time, or they used to anyway, nowadays I'm not sure if they give out Grammys for records that are actually wroth your time and money. But in this case, Frank was perceived by the general public as a "rock musician", and therefore it was the rock and pop categories that he typically got nominated in.

Jazz fusion is typically played by actual human musicians.

100% Zappa - trying for avant-classical music, in this case, but with bits of jazz, rock, and musical performance art showing up unpredictably here and there.

No matter, Jazz From Hell is not fusion or jazz, it's modern composition.

I always loved it when they called him "Rocker, Frank Zappa..." I just can see Frank's smirk.
