Thread: Synthesizer Gear Porn ;-)

The Waldorf STVC definitely intrigues as a Streichfett with a vocoder. Still, my Waldorf microQ works great as a vocoder, but I rarely if ever use that functionality these days.

Here's a question for the synth hive mind. If you noticed from my live show, I like to use old credit cards and gift cards to hold notes for drone creation purposes. I've found it more flexible than a sustain pedal approach. However, black keys matter.

Anyone have insight on small weights to use for this purpose?

This Key Dog product seems designed specifically for holding notes, but they are kinda pricey and a bit large.

I had an old style stapler with a weighted bottom that was perfect for holding down notes of any sort.

What I'd like to find is the older rounded weights used in Ye Olde Scales. (commence Internet search)

Well, duh. Said search reveals those are what I am picturing in my mind. Pretty cheap at Bezosland as well.

Ah! Key weights! The first time I was in the presence of synths my pal used them to hold down a note on the ARP 2600 keyboard so he could tune and fiddle.

He used a chromed steel cylinder I have always looked for something similar. But yes a quick solution would be a set of weights for balance scales.

For some synths there's a built-in solution. Like on my Roland JV/XP synths...just switch the polarity of the sustain pedal, tap it once and boom: instant sustain until you press the pedal again

Look what Dave Stewart did in Bruford (about 8:30):

We watched this Saturday. Synth porn indeed.

Sadly, the weights I picked up were too light. 20g. I may pick up a couple of these as I noted earlier. https://kvgear.com/products/key-dog

    Although Dave Stewart’s are nice.

I am not surprised. Any weighted keyboard would need something heavy like the one you linked. I want a few too!

Only 1,000 oscillators? PFFFT...if it isn't at least 10k and/or doesn't cause all lights in the neighborhood to dim, it's a joke

    Just finished listening...

1 ) It is indeed most impressive and thick
2 ) It is easily the most extreme example of modular gone awry...you need a ladder and an afternoon to generate one note or chord
3 ) I'm tempted to record/sample the held drone midway toward the end of the video, play a full chord with both hands and generate a 10k oscillator drone. SUCK IT AND DIE, MERE KILO-SYNTH

He hasn't done a 'complete walkthrough' of the finished piece ( yet ). I am guessing that the large blueish devices stacked on the left are power supplies.
There are some amps flowing through all of that hand soldered stuff.

As soon as the oscillators are free running, the sound gets close to noise (which theoretically is a sum of "all" frequencies at once). I guess most sounds from that creation will resemble noise more than anything else. With an elaborate control system, maybe it could be used for additive synthesis - but that would require some sort of phase locking - as soon as a set of overtones drift apart - you guessed it - noise

The additive synthesis thing was the sort of thing that Wendy Carlos was aiming for with her 80s work. She aligned with the Digital Systems company, in addition to the much-maligned Crumar to that end (with the aid of a KayPro computer, just like Peggy Hill!)

I would love some combination of additive and subtractive synthesis.

That's kind of the idea behind the Kawai K3. It has a programmable digital waveform, which means you can additively create a new waveform by selecting the levels of each individual harmonic, and then you can use it as a source for the subtractive synthesis (with real analog filters, not digital!). Sure, it's a bit crude compared to what we are normally discussing here, but quite an interesting synth for its time...

The Hydrasynth does a variant of additive plus subtractive as well.

Anyone here ever come across one of these? It looks super cool, not 100% sure it's something that would ever elevate above "novelty status" in my own studio though...

Directly sharing the video from the above page...so this synth still isn't going to be high on my buy list but I will say, touchscreen control of envelopes is officially going to be the coolest trick I'll see today

Looks cool, but I'm not that impressed by the largest part of the video.

  25. #975
Yeah...it's nothing I would reach for regularly in the studio.

But it is a fairly clever idea and for someone who is a huge FM synthesis fan (not me ), it might be tempting...
