Thread: Synthesizer Gear Porn ;-)

That Surge is interesting. I seem to have it downloaded already. Found some banjo sound, but to short for my taste. Tweeking made it better, but in the end it sounded more like a harpsichord and not like a banjo, if I compare it with my dad's old banjo. I suppose I should tune it and record some notes.

Saw this yesterday at a friend of mine.
    https://vcvrack.com/
She and her husband are not really into music or synthesizers, but her husband has a love for anything technical. Like the Voltage Modular it is partly free and partly paid downloads.

Wow...browsed through the library and there's some really cool stuff in there.

I've always struggled a bit with software-based modular synths; finally starting to accept that my brain is biased toward playing rather than programming! Might be something to try and improve...
If you're actually reading this then chances are you already have my last album but if NOT and you're curious:

I'm less into playing and perhaps more into programming.

Alas it looks like I can't use it in Cubase, which makes it of not much use.

^Sweet. Which particular doll brand is he using to make those? It would be awesome if he did the same with one of the monster babies from the It's Alive franchise.

    Congratulations, Proud Papa!

The brief video was delightfully bizarre!! I look forward to what you develop with your latest tool, um, child.

Ha ha, no idea...it's definitely not the It's Alive critter but it's not cheap junk either. It's a pretty darn sturdy little doll!

He's definitely got a playdate with some of my FX pedals in the very near future

It's a cool backline, and the trumpet solo at the end was a nice touch

The music itself...it's not that I don't enjoy techno, but this particular music didn't feel like the best example of what that modular setup could likely do. That said, I'm sure it was a fantastically fun live experience

    Thanks for sharing!!

I recently joined the "Keyboard Synthesizer and Piano" group on Facebook. Damn, these people have an obsession. Sure, I love looking at their massive keyboard rigs, but the itchy fingers and empty pocket syndrom is making me think it might be better for me to leave.

I can imagine that. That's why I love soft-synths. They don't weight that heavy on my wallet, though even there one might want to spend more. Arturia adding new instruments to their package and Roland with a subscription model (which I don't really like).

Roland Cloud definitely irritates me. The one soft synth I purchased from them is also the last one I'll ever purchase. I bought a copy, not subscribed...but I'm still expected to authenticate every week or so to keep using what I bought.

As for gear lust...I'm lucky enough that my mild OCD desire for a clean, efficient workflow means I'm more interested in streamlined setups than massive stacks of gadgets

Well, I don't have problems with Arturia, but the subscription idea of Roland annoys the hell out of me.

And streamlined setups have their adventages, over a massive stack, which in a way is a bit of a problem with the Arturia stuff. With less stuff you learn to get everything from the instruments you have. With Arturia there are some instruments I use and others I tend to skip. So a new version of Arturia needs to have enough stuff I really want.

No subscriptions for me. There's enough of that on my TV. I do this for fun, not professional or for profit.

As for the plethora of instruments on Arturia, yeah, it would take 3 months to learn any one instrument enough to program it sucessfully. So I mostly start with presets and then tweak them to my liking. However, when I do want to dig into an instrument I can watch a you tube video or three and get more from them. It's a nice thing to have on a rainy day.

    I don't want suscriptions either. That's why I also don't want Office 365.

I mostly try to start from scratch when I'm programming one of the Arturia soft synths. I'm not very happy with the user manuals, which spend to much pages on the general use of all stuff, which is the same for each instrument. I think the user manual of my first synthesizer (a Roland series 100 Model 101) was bigger, than any of the Arturia manuals, at least the part that is not about the software in general.

I don't have the money for massive stacks, so I have to settle for the next best thing the Arturia V Collection.

I'm not exactly 100% as minimalist as I want to be either But the first step is admitting where I have a problem!

That problem is easy solved for me. Not enough money to buy stacks of synthesizers.
