So hey, who wants to hear a little sob story from yours truly for a change?
I have a Xerxes desktop synth, which is an Elka Synthex clone from the same people who made Deckard's Dream (the CS-80 clone). You know, 'cause when you want to get your "Jean Michel Jarre" on and nail that lazer harp present...accept no substitutes
Anyway, I moved recently to a new apartment and during the rebuild of the studio (cough spare bedroom cough) I decided to rackmount the Xerxes along with a few other devices. They were kind enough to include rack ears with the synth so it was a simple matter of swapping out the wood sides for the ears and in the rack it went!
Only....I reused the screws from the wood sides instead of the separate ones included with ears because what could go wrong? Oh nothing, except that wood sides were deeper than the ears and thus required longer screws. And since the ears were much thinner than the wood sides, the longer screws went further into the case and one managed to push a chip right off the goddamned board, turning my 8-voice polysynth into a 7-voice polysynth in less than 30 seconds.
Let us all pause to share a collective facepalm at the cruel irony of a
$3,500 synth done in by a $0.02 screw. Oh yes, the tears flow greater than the lasers at a Jarre concert, yes indeed...
Anyway...currently looking for a local electrician who can re-attach the chip. It's SMT and the chip itself appears ok, I'm hoping it can simply be a resolder job.
Good times, best times, all the times!
