I would expect that date will slip into 2010...for me personally $750 is probably too steep. Not sure MORE moving parts necessarily is a selling point for me
For me neither. Mij first synthesizer, which is more than 40 years old, seems to be working still.

    Is that the Roland modular?

The Roland semi-modular. I only have the basic unit, not the additional unit.

3rd pass at a Behringer DS-80 is IMHO a good improvement:

I think it's great what Behringer is doing cloning the old analog beasts of the past at a much more affordable price, as long as they maintain quality which so far looks like their quality and support is very good.

I'm a Moog guy and love my Voyager, but I worked a lot of overtime hours to afford it back in 2004 and I got my Maple version for $2500 from Big City Music. I think it's great they offer the Model D for folks on a budget, I'm just not a fan of downsized gear.
But if stuff is out of patent and it's legal, then it's fair game.
And it used to piss me off everyone was asking the big 3 for some analog stuff and they stood on the sidelines. It wasn't until Dave Smith released the Prophet 08 they started listening once they saw there was a viable market for it.
And Korg pissed me off too when I bought one of the first Korg Arp Odyssey's slim key Rev 1 white which the white version was presented as a limited edition and once gone they were gone. They've since gone on to make the FS white version which I bought after selling my slim keys and that was sold as limited edition as well. They are STILL selling the white Rev 1's.
So, it doesn't bother me Behringer is making a Odyssey version for $500? and I've heard demos and it sounds fantastic.

Back on topic regarding the CS-80 clone, all of a sudden Yamaha is putting out feelers by asking people if they would want a remake...really????

Actually, it was the other way around...Yamaha started inquiring about interest in a new CS-80. Less than 2 days later, Behringer suddenly announced THEIRS.

I'm curious about both, but more curious about the Yamaha one if we're being honest. The quality of the keybed and the nature of the aftertouch is going to be probably the biggest deciding factor for me IF I decide to go for either.

Yes, based on previous products from both, I'd lean towards the Yamaha.

How does your Deckard's Dream (I even love the name of that thing!) compare to the CS-80, John?

Well, I've never actually played a real CS-80 so I'm missing about half the experience with the keyboard, ribbon and poly aftertouch.

From a pure sound standpoint, it is almost identical to the Arturica CS-80V (slightly beefier, which isn't a shock given the DDRM is pure analog). Apparently the CS-80 had a glitch in the sawtooth waveform that made said waveform slightly unique. It is possible to mod the DDRM to get the glitch waveform for EXACT replication, but I opted against it. It's absolutely close enough for me.

The DDRM can do true MPE though, which takes the concept of a ribbon to a whole other level. With MPE, velocity, aftertouch, CC messages AND pitch glides are all per note. Holding a chord and rolling just my left hand finger can cause a held octave to positively growl while the right hand does it's own thing. It is easily one of the most responsive, expressive and nuanced synths I've ever used.

The Deckard's Dream is a GREAT name, isn't it??

SO...speaking of names. Some of you may be Star Wars fans. There's a new film coming out. One of the planets that is in the new film is called Kijimi. Which happens to also be the name of the OTHER Black Corporation synth currently in production (along with the Deckard's Dream). Very cool coincidence, right?

Or maybe not...maybe JJ Abrams has damned fine taste in electronic instruments because THIS isn't a photoshop, it's for real:

Now THAT is one hell of a product endorsement if ever I saw one

well there have been so many Behringer threads over at GS I get them confused.lol I know a lot of people have been naming the CS80 along with the Jupiter 8 as synths they want Uli to make.
I seriously believe they've been working on it behind the scenes for some time, but that's speculation on my part. So when the Yamaha announcement came out they showed their cards...or they did a very quick team meeting and came up with a rendered photo.
Just to note, I don't own any Behringer products nor have I ever.
As far as I remember Yamaha just put feelers out there asking what the interest would be.But I only spot check GS now and then anymore and haven't followed those threads at all.
At any rate, I'm done buying synths at this stage and it wouldn't be on my to buy list anyway, as much as I think it's an awesome synth, I do think most people talk about it because of the Bladerunner patch. lol

If I had the cash and the space I really love the grit and tone coming out of the Moog Matriarch, and the price is very fair in my opinion. I think it's great to see Moog moving in a more modern direction and making stuff a bit more out of the "box". I'm also impressed with the new UDO polysynth.

I'm quite happy with the stuff I've got now, and even regularly use my original VFX-SD from the late 80's. I guess you'd call it vintage, vintage digital.

    Have a great holiday weekend.

How cool! That is a great photo.

And thanks for your thoughts on the DD/CS-80 comparo.

Ribbons are such cool things. I don't know why they are not more common. I like them and have small ones one various devices such as a few of my Roland products (very useful on the original HandSonic) and my Korg. But the long one on my Kurzweil 2500XS is especially usable

But MPE sounds even better. It has been a long time coming; I hope most manufacturers start fully embracing it.

  13. #713
I love ribbons too! I actually have two Doepfer R2M ribbons - one for use with my Eurorack stuff and a 2nd that is mounted above the keybed on my Voyager for all sorts of fun pitch bends and modulations.

MPE is really, really cool. It's a bit tricky at first; it takes a much greater degree of control over finger position/movement/pressure, but as you get the hang of it...wow. I hope to see more controllers and devices coming in the future with MPE support built in

Additional expressive capabilities like what the Roli and Linnstrument offer as well as MPE are very exciting options to have.

I kinda wished that Roland had further developed their "D-Beam" trigger so that it was more theremin-type. It is still cool...I enjoy it and I've seen Geoff Downes use it to good effect.

I love the D-Beam too! I have one on my Fantom X6 and actually do use it in performance. I remember seeing the guys in Kenso using them as well around NEARfest.

IMHO pretty much any kind of "alternate/expressive" control like a D-Beam, ribbon, XYZ pad, Touche, or the like is going to inject some "humanity" into a performance.

    Absolutely!
The "XYZ pad" concept such as in the Korg KAOSS devices (and incorporated into the Kronos) are especially fun and useful. They truly do help "humanize" synths.

Is it ok if I say I'm genuinely impressed with the number of synths, as well as admitting I kind of want to put a muzzle on that kid?

Ha, ha, me too. I had no idea who he was but evidently knows something about synths. I was nervous the way he was pulling out some of the synth, talk about high energy or too high of energy.

I hate to crap on anyone's enthusiasm (and I suspect that, much like most "reality" shows, there's probably a whole LOT of safeguarding going on to make sure this dude doesn't drop something truly rare/one of a kind)...but yeah, it's a bit grating at times. This is the same dude who did a CS-80 video where he has it on a VERY wobbly stand and it's shaking quite a bit as he plays...I'm just waiting for that moment where the whole thing topples (not like he's going to be able to grab and support 200+ lbs of synth on his own).

Still...that aside, it's a damned fine room. I'd certainly lose a few hours in there, minimum

Synth player Ulrich Schnauss, played with Tangerine Dream for a while, name your own price over at Bandcamp.
