Thread: Synthesizer Gear Porn ;-)

The D-05 thingie? It's using controllers...the keyboard itself looks like maybe something from Roland's own controller collection (maybe the A500 Pro?).

The PG1000 is the programmer "assistant" for the D-50; like the PG300 and the Juno, it gives slider access to most of the sound editing parameters.

Yes, I was meaning the keyboard itself--the keyboard that the Roland D-05 is sitting on top of. You say it looks like an, A500 Pro? I was just curious.

Re: The PG1000 is the programmer "assistant" for the D-50; (did you mean D-05?)

At any rate, I read about those Roland Boutique hardware here: http://www.factmag.com/2017/10/28/st...ns-techniques/

There are some other interesting links on there as well.

No, I meant the D-50...the PG1000 was an 80's product along with the D-50 to assist with sound sculpting. There's a D-50 in the Legowelt video (I believe that's the keyboard on the stand to the right), but since they share architecture I assumed that the PG1000 would be compatible with the new D-05 was well.

Looks like it is, based on a few vids on YT: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbGMklJIyXQ That is actually a pretty strong selling point...the PG controllers are excellent.

And that is the A500 Pro...found a few pics online that pretty much match. So, all controllers with the D-05 generating all the sounds

If they ever do a Boutique version of the U series, I am so down. I have a U-220 but it isn't in terribly good shape; pretty sure the cost for repairs would be roughly equal to the cost of a boutique unit, lol

The U-220 is like $100 used... I feel like if Roland did a boutique reissue it would be more than that.

I ended up with one of these thanks to Banco. It was on their rider for FMPM whatever year they played, and there weren't any around to rent. I found a guy in the boonies near Ottawa who had one for sale, so now I own one. It's been touched by Vittorio Nocenzi (*swoon*), and I guess the sounds that are loaded when you turn it on are the ones he used.

Yeah...the U-20 sound patches are all over the two re-done Banco albums (BMS and Darwin).

The only trick is that it is a 30+ year old device. The one I got off eBay used was probably only about $125...and the outputs all stopped working about six months later. The cost to get it back in working shape will be around $150 minimum (assuming I find someone semi-local). And that assumes that they tune up EVERYTHING that could be on verge of crapping out.

A Boutique would be about $399, give or take. And likely to last for a while without needing serous TLC. So, that's kind of the thought process.

    Thanks for looking, Battema.

(But it isn't in terribly good shape; pretty sure the cost for repairs would be roughly equal to the cost of a boutique unit.)

Sadly I guess this is the bane of all musicians: upgrading to something, and how to either trade-in or sell off the old hardware. I've not found a solution without getting soaked. A lot of shops don't do trade-in or barely give you 1/4 of what it's worth. Some say just sell it on Craigslist or whatever. I don't think much is sold that way, however, it makes me wonder what becomes of everyone's older equipment. I wish there was a barter system, and not just for musical equipment ie. if someone had a used guitar perhaps they didn't want anymore and preferred a gaming system, vacuum cleaner, or whatever, you could barter.

Well, in all fairness there are indeed vintage instruments. I mean, my MKS-50 has been in my studio for over two decades, and I knew the original owner and he was a serious smoker in the studio. So, to have lasted this long without really any issue is damned impressive. As for the U-220, I don't know this unit's specific history but they were new in the late 80's so it is still a long-lasting instrument. Anytime I buy something vintage like that, there's a risk it won't be issue-free for an extended period.

Still, I love my dusty old gadgets as much as the shiny new ones, and I'm very, very lucky to have 'em

For sure, you are lucky. I'd be very hesitant to buy anything electronic from a smoker. I think that's what cratered my Arp. Granted they can be refurbished, and cleaned, etc. if you can find someone professionally to do it right. But who wants to do that if it can be possibly avoided.

  9. #334
Well, it was my electronic music professor in college, and I was a poor college student. He offered me the MKS-50 for just $50 so it wasn't exactly something I could turn down!!

I used various non-abrasive cleaners on the exterior, cleaned out the ports and let it air out for about a week. And honestly, it's been a workhorse ever since

But you're right...nowadays when considering used gear, the environment is crucial. Just like buying a car, I want something that has been treated with care

EDITED: Misspoke, Banco was using the MKS 20, not 50.

Had you turned down that kind of offer, you'd have to do the old head-door-jamb maneuver a few times.

Not sure about that one. It misses their creativity.

If you want clothing that doesn't show any selfrespect, how about this keyboardplayer?

Did he accidently pick the clothes from his sister?

Really? The Roland MKS-20 Piano module? My buddy and I bought them when they came out. For awhile it was the best piano sound and the lowest cost (and 16 note polyphony). But they are rare birds and almost never get any mentions on line. I still have mine.

That's what I thought as well, when I recorded that broadcast.
