This is going to be a rather short thread.

Having snarkily said that, the Alsan isn't too much of a stretch, although no one could or ever will write lyrics like Peter Blegvad.

Any time any one speaks to me about any musical project, the one absolute given is "it will not make big money". [tip of the hat to HK]

I cant hear the Alsan resemblance to The Slaps, but ears cant be attached to heads in different ways.

Yes, Blegvad is unique and very few sound like Dagmar Krause.

Not really a proper band, but I say Kurt Weill.

I always see After Dinner as a sort of - *sort of* - Japanese Slapp Happy, although Slapp Happy is much, much more interesting to my ears.

I thought of them too, but I'm pretty sure they are not in the same game. After Dinner is more about aesthetics, Slapp Happy is more about a message.

Very well put. I most certainly agree.

Although you could also say that Kurt Weill was about aesthetics, and Bertolt Brecht was about a message - the Brecht/Weill songs being the roots of Slapp Happy, as well as of substantial aspects of the Art Bears. Part of the reason that, even though Brecht and Weill might have done some of their best work together, they never found it easy to collaborate. Brecht might have had a less difficult time in his later work with Hanns Eisler, who shared his uncompromising political convictions.

Agreed. Does anyone sound like them? Maybe other Blegvad projects like the Lodge, slightly, but I don’t think anyone captured quite their unique mix of pop, quirkiness and eggheaded lyrics.

Ha, I just heard it this morning from the room next door (who knew hotel bad acoustics could come in beneficial )

Last night performance was excellent, btw, but Cologne show was more emotional for me, being the first Slapp Happy show that I get to see...
The renditions were flawless (if you omit the false starts which were mostly amusing), the sound and mix were fantastic, much better than Cologne.
Perhaps some of the songs were a bit slow in tempo (just a conversation, heading for Kyoto which Dagmar herself said was on the slow train this time ), but I didnt mind, for me the evening was perfect.
Also great to see the ammount of love the band gets from the audience, Dagmar seemed overwhelmed by it at times.
