Thread: Fly From Here is to be re-released with Horn on vocals next year?

Try listening to the original without the overture or just start the suite at minute 2:00. It starts out very somber and powerful. The overture distracts from that. Bumpy Ride is also musically interesting but doesn't belong anywhere near "Fly From Here". Not within a county mile.

Yeah, it's awful. Someone on here at the time said it was like bad videogame music. Would have been better to have had an instrumental which brought all the previous themes together.
You might be thinking of me - I said it was like TV game show music.

I wonder if the "unreleased track" will be a version of "Go Through This"?

There is a certain logic in that guess.

My guess would be not. I think we'll get something recorded in the Fly from Here sessions that wasn't used. As far as we know, "Go Through This" wasn't touched then. However, it's possible we'll get something more recently recorded.

Does anyone know how to obtain it if you can't make it to a convention? I'd gladly pay someone to get it for me.

^ It will be receiving a more general release in due course, after the convention, although precisely how and when has not been announced.

I still cant see the point of this release. I don't see how Horn's voice will be better than Benoit David's. I'd be more interested if they'd remix Time And A Word with Steve Howe on it, but even so, why mess with the original?

Musicians and bands mess with the originals all the time. Perhaps just because something is the original, that doesn't mean it's the best or the only interesting version.

It hasn't been said anywhere that this is being done to make it "better," has it?

I suppose it's a matter of how well Horn's voice has aged.

You can judge that from multiple recent studio releases and live outings. Pretty good if you ask me.

The versions of "Go Through This" and "We Can Fly From Here" on The Word Is Live were taken from a radio broadcast (I even remember a magazine ad for the broadcast from 1980 or '81) and had circulated as bootlegs for years. Extremely poor sound, with a persist buzz from a ground loop somewhere in the signal chain, but that's the way the broadcast went out. Sadly, there *aren't* any soundboards from that tour, or they'd probably be preferable.

I don't think "Bumpy Ride" is bad, but it doesn't work in the context of the suite. For me, the suite lurches rather abruptly from "Bumpy Ride" to the "WCFFH Reprise", and it feels like an important part is missing. There needed to be one more big song in there to be a proper climax. I haven't heard the other expansions of the original song that Horn/Downes did, however.

This would convince me to finally pick up this release, actually. Love Horn's voice (check out The Producers for recent Horn vox), and feel like this is the logical follow-up to Drama.

Benoit David's voice on FFH is very, very similar to Horn's.
Music isn't about chops, or even about talent - it's about sound and the way that sound communicates to people. Mike Keneally

    This needs one more "very"...

Maybe two. I was listening to FFH a few days ago trying to hear in my head how it would sound with Horn, and I couldn't distinguish what I was hearing in my head from what I was hearing in my ears.

Indeed. I'm still struggling with the whole point of this release other than to deny Benoit David royalties.

Supposedly, Benoit’s backing vocals will still be there. Also, he had a writing credit on “Into the Storm.” I’m sure he will be paid something.

Fly from Here has already sold probably pretty much as many copies as it is ever going to sell. Return Trip is primarily going to sell to people who already have the original, so, taking jrw's point, it's going to mean more money for David.

I saw what you did there, slipping in the official release name!
