Genesis- The Way We Walk vol 1 & 2. I always blamed GnR for this kind of marketing crap but everyone here proved me wrong
Ayreon's Universal Migrator I & II were originally released as separate albums, and later re-released as a double album. Apparently Lucassen originally felt that the fanbase of Ayreon can be divided into prog fans and metal fans, so he put all prog songs on Part I and metal songs on Part II, allowing people to buy the one whose style they preferred. Eventually he realized that no such division exists.
Peter Gabriel - Plays Live Disc 1 and Disc 2
I located and purchased the two for $8.50 at a used book store a couple of years ago. The cashier was going to charge me $8.50 each, but I showed her that the two were rubber-banded together

Bruce Springsteen released Human Touch and Lucky Town simultaneously in '92, citing they were two different statements musically and thus not a double ablum... as if.
Steve Hillage's "For To Next" was originally sold sealed together with the separate LP "And Not Or" as a limited bonus. Later FTN was just sold on its own.
Bill Nelson is another artist who included bonus LPs of instrumentals with a few of his records.
These were never sold as one. I wish they had been a proper double live CD. That arbitrary 'short/long' sequencing is completely artificial, and the 2nd one even ends with the drum duet- baffling sequencing. I understand the remixed live box re-sequenced it but I think that version only came out in that box.
I didn't know this- sounds like Dire Straits' Alchemy from the same period. Even more confusingly there's a one disc Plays Live Highlights (with 3/4 of the whole double album) which is by far the most common one in my experience.
One rather weird one is that The Beach Boys' album Carl And The Passions-So Tough was actually first released as part of a double album...the other disc being Pet Sounds!!
In the early days of CD some double albums would be packaged as two separate CDs in the same longbox. My copy of Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything? and the copy of Neil Diamond's Hot August Night my parents had were like this. I guess in some cases used CD stores goof and sell the discs separately.
Many, many years ago at a sale in Woolworths I picked up a cassette of English comedian Mike Harding; Volume 2 of a live set; when I got home I realised the tape inside the box was Volume 1; no idea what happened to the other half of the package. Presumable someone got vol 2 in vol 1's box.

System Of A Down released the separate albums Mezmerize and Hypnotize in 2005. The digipak covers and artwork of the two albums were designed to insert/fold together to make a double album digipak for the two CDs.

Confirmed Bachelors: the dramedy hit of 1883...
To clarify my posting of PG - Plays Live - Disc 1 and 2 were for the CD release - I believe the LP was a proper double album
And yes, I had been 'burned' by the 'Plays Live Highlights' single CD

jean michel jarre, “electronica 1” and “2”, separate CDs …
wasn’t “sing to god” by CARDiACS originally separated into two distinct halves?
Neil Young - Arc-Weld, triple CD, later split into the double CD Weld, and a single CD Arc.
Opeth's Damnation and Deliverance were recorded as a double album, but were released separately (perhaps because they were very different stylistically).
I think they eventually released a vinyl version as one combined album.
